Judging by these first three missions, there'll be MANY grunt-body-check opportunities in Halo 5's campaign. Spoilers!

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Posted by: Drew

In This Episode:

Halo 5: Guardians

Episode Notes:

This is our fourth Unfinished for Halo 5. We've covered a little bit of the campaign (missions 1, 2, and 8), the Multiplayer Beta (Arena mode), and the Warzone multiplayer mode.

I don't think I'll ever understand the appeal of this series.

  1. They're usually good games
  2. Halo is pretty much every 90s shooter rolled into one
  3. The games industry is dominated by cinematic/shooting/driving/sports games; Halo satisfies all of those things
  4. No competition: Halo and Call of Duty are the only shooters that people care about
  5. Wide appeal:
    1. gamers + challenge = success
    2. kids + funny aliens = success
    3. teen angst + power fantasy = success
    4. nerds + science fiction = success
    5. jocks + competition = success
    6. grown men + nostalgia = success

Really jarring to see those xbox pop-ups be so framey when the games runs at 60fps.

I was gonna say, another Unfinished?!

EDIT: They keep saying about the intro cutscene, "Man, this is cool." All I can think is, "Man, this is anime."

Also, I wonder how Bungie feels about 343 retconning this much? Bungie: "Spartans have to be engineered from birth." 343: "Oh, Buck? Yeah, he became a Spartan in about three years, no problem." And that's just the tip of the iceberg. I don't think the Halo lore is some amazing thing, but I did really enjoy the premise. But they've gone so far off the rails; the early books added so much absurd tripe, and they've just built on it since.

Let me put it this way: The manual for Halo: CE says, in a very space opera-ey way, that Master Chief is "the last SPARTAN-II." Now? We got high flyin', fist pumpin' Spartans for days. "Master Chief Petty Officer First Class?" Psh, this is the military, kid, call them by their names. Remember how cool Captain Jacob Keyes and Cortana were? Well, now we've decided that Keyes hooked up with Halsey, the lady who created the Spartan program and who Cortana's mind is based on! So, since Halsey is your mother (literally, George calls her mom in Halo: Reach) and Cortana is a memory imprint of her, you're basically lightly flirting with your mom for three games. Also, a close friend and co-worker, Sergeant Johnson has a thing for Miranda Keyes, the daughter of Halsey and Jacob. So your mom/AI is in your head while your co-worker tries to date your half sister. This is less space opera and more soap opera.

There are different types of Spartans. Chief, and Blue Team were the last and most efficient "breed" of Spartans known as SPARTAN-II's. They were plucked away from their families from the age of six, underwent the most extensive and brutal augmentations to become the soldiers they are today. They were literally picked as the perfect specimens. The third and fourth generations of Spartans didn't have that type of training or augmentation, and aren't as efficient. But, for their benefit, it was safer for their benefit and they were easier to "mass produce".

Also in the novels, the rest of Blue team that we see in Halo 5 (Kelly, Linda and Fred), were shown to have survived, so this isn't non-canon.

@mlarrabee: I can't really fault you for feeling like that. One minor thing though, Jorge refers to Halsey as "ma'am," but his accent causes the word to come out like "mom."

@osaladin: Ha! Wishful thinking. There isn't a single chance Halo is coming to PC other than the hacked-up f2p game and twin-stick mobile ports. Halo Wars 2 might come out on PC, simply because the genre fits much better for PC than a first-person shooter.

The product placement on MI6 Rogue Nation was nothing more than the dev build put on a high-end PC for show. Unless there is a way to put 3 HDMI's into an Xbox One, or Microsoft puts out it's own little gimmick, then it may as well be impossible to actually have that setup for Halo 5

I don't remember when or why the tutorial from Halo 1 became such a big deal to the crew and I don't get why it's as funny as it is, but dammit, it cracks me up every single time.

Am I missing something? There's a lot of gushing over the graphics but I'm not seeing anything especially notable there...arguably the environment stuff actually looks kind of bad (you call that ice?)

Regardless of how much Dan drives me crazy sometimes during podcasts, he seems to be the only one of the west crew (not counting the technical folks) who still has unabashed excitement for video games. Every time Jeff or Brad say they like something they have to prefix or postfix it with some eeyore-esque negative comment about why it probably sucks. I'll take Dan on video streams all day by comparison. Of course I wouldn't take Jeff any other way, he's the cranky old videogame grandpa of the collective gaming community.

@general_mapache: I love how Jeff never lets a chance for a Wu reference go by.

@ferenz: Very true, which is why I particularly enjoy having Drew and/or Jason on the other side of the camera. In fairness to Jeff and Brad though, with the sheer number of games they each cover per year it must be easy to get jaded.

Is it me or Dan is in every damn video?....I dont hate the guy but...cmon you CAN get too much of Ryckert.

I hate Dan. I don't know why... I don't know when this started happening... All I know is that I hate him. The man's demeanor and aura demands that we treat him like a villain, like the heel that he is

*EDIT*
On second thought.... I think I love him

Do they play any multiplayer in this video? Don't want to watch any campaign parts because I'm planning on buying the game.

I would assume that they do a multiplayer video at launch once all the servers are up and running and the game is out next week.

@ferenz: I find jeff or brad's apprehension to new titles quite refreshing in this day and age where 'hype' has become a cliche meme and almost every preview can be summed up as 'it's shaping up to be pretty good'

@jedikv: Everyone is entitled to their own opinions; I just find it a bit sad to watch a group of game journalists lose their excitement for video games. I've seen the same thing in game developers consistently - I guess that's why they say don't make your hobby your job.

That custscene is really cool, then you're just a normal dude running around with a gun, and thats not very cool at all.

edit: like seriously, wasn't there supposed to be improved movement and stuff? Where is that?
