I'm weirdly into the idea of this game, but I really don't know if i'll end up playing it. However (as I dig out my old Metal Gear foil hat), it already seems to be lacking that Kojima attention to detail. If I remember correctly, this Mother Base is supposed to be the one that was collapsing at the end of Ground Zeroes. If that's the case, the Diamond Dogs weren't a thing yet, the logo on Mother Base should be an MSF logo instead.

I feel dirty being into this game. But besides the big bars indicating my HUNGER and THRIST, it's checking a lot of boxes that I like.

Also, I think timed bonuses ARE better than straight up loot boxes; I'm not detracting from the "eugh" factor, it still sucks. But I was relieved to learn that at least.

Maybe... just maybe I will like this game. God, I'm getting excited for Metal Gear Survive. If you told me I'd be thinking this way three months ago, I'd have punched you in the nose.

This seems like someone said "Hey we have an amazing game engine whats the quickest least effort way we can turn that thing into another game?"

"What's that? Take the zombies, everyones favo thing from the last one and make it a game? Done."

Why do they have Diamond Dogs markings on the Mother Base ruins? I thought the setup for this game was people got sucked through a portal after Skullface destroyed Mother Base at the end of Ground Zeroes when Big Boss was still leading MSF. How does anyone in this game know about Diamond Dogs?

Because this game is the big publisher equivalent of an asset flip. People have done comparison videos of the footage they showed back at TGS and it's literally the Afghanistan map again but with some minor tweaks to buildings.

What a world.

The gameplay in MGS V was super good. I don't know where this will go, but seeing more of this engine is a great reminder of that.

It seems somewhat competent, maybe..., but there's no way I'm giving Konami anywhere near north of $20 to play this game.

Kinda hilarious to watch Metal Gear copy Fortnite while Fortnite copies PUBG. Keep an eye out for Metal Gear Royale next year!

No but really, this does seem interesting. I'll be curious to see what the full game ends up like. MGSV is still the best controlling game I've ever played, so I've been holding out some small amount of hope for this to turn into something cool... but so far this seems like the gameplay doesn't have much of the goofy and playful open world hijinks that MGSV did, or the super tight, incredibly well designed stealth gameplay that I loved in that game. We'll see, I guess.

oh boy the salt in the comments should be glorious with how i saw people react at kojima and konami cutting ties yet still using the engine and assets they paid for and should for all likely reasons reuse for profit as a company.

Gees this game will have to climb a hill to get the same attention for what all intense and purposes has the same controls and gameplay many gave the prior game GOTY for.

Reminds me of the love for Shadows of mordor gameplay being so strong to give it goty even if people hated everything else. MGS5 was hated nearly everything including story yet got GOTY for such great gameplay. Sequel of Shadows of mordor is just more great gameplay from first one and people hate it. MGS survive is essentially more gameplay but the background discussion around the game is making people hate it more than it should be. Games these days that deserve 7/10 are in the eyes of the consumer 4/10 if the development politics rub them the wrong way.

Boy do i miss a bit of the naivety of looking at a game magazine 4 or so pictures reading about the creators vision for the game seeing a decent review then buying it without all the negative feelings i get when people point out every nitpick and issue surrounding the game.

that being said i guess learning all you need about your purchase is much better. Loot boxes in SoM could just be your last straw so i get it. This game just copying there prior game is also a fair reason for passing on it. The game is trying for a worn trend. Games take years to make so jumping on the PUBG trend would take too long especially if they had to make an entire new one for a sequel.

@panfoot: there is not one redeeming quality besides the engine they are using. And people complain about asset flips? This is a straight up mod for MSGV with paid currency.

It seems like a good pivot thou...im not getting the game but just with the base MGSV alone you had a game with extreme attention to detail yet no place to really use it a ton. Think about it ( the ai in MGSV will smell you when you dont shower, adapt to how you play, change outfits, look for different paths to an objective ect.) I know why people dislike this game with the whole kojima thing but if you take away the MGS logo this could work. With survive mechanics you could have characters needing to find shelter for long treks across the map, needing to ration food, developing ptsd in a gameplay mechnic, with kojima's engine and its attention to little things this could be a great survival game. The asset like switch just saves time in making an entire new game which would take 3 more years than necessary.

So that voice reminds me a lot of Shitbot from Dreamfall Chapters. The only reason I remember Shitbot is because Vinny argued for it to be included in GOTY best character category or something.

Say what you want about Konami, but Fox engine with Co-op sounds like a whole lot of fun.

I feel because of all the whole Konami stuff that this game won't get given a chance for most people.

Hopefully it's good!

@chmanitand1988: Okay, maybe i should have phrased my response better. The turn in gameplay from this particular entry is NOWHERE NEAR where I think this engine shines. MGSV was such a superb stealth experience that I think it is a huge waste to use this IP for a survival "horror" genre.

I will admit it, using the assets that were made specifically for a Kojima experience do rub me the wrong way, and I will admit my bias. I think some people will enjoy this game. However, it comes across as disingenuous to me when the looting sounds are the exact same, the iDroid has the same sounds, the engine graphically is untouched, and there is no attempt to distinguish itself.

Its very hard for me to accept any plot device they use within this game as cannon, just as if there was a sequel to The Witness without Jonathan Blow as the main architect. I think it tarnishes a franchise which resonated with a player-base that enjoyed quirky story with semi serious gameplay. For the above reasons this game not only does not have my interest, it has some contempt from me.

I apologize though for my previous comment lacking any sort of analysis without reflection on why I feel that way.

This looks like a trap. This game could be so easily exploited by Konami. So many things ticking down that they could let tick down a little too fast to get you to spend some money to temporarily fix the game for you.

Also considering the pretty high MGS standards, I'm pretty concerned about the characters and story seeming to be as good as absent. The enemies seem less interesting too. I hope there will be more enemy types because if it's like this all the way through it looks basically like an asset flip.

Man, I wish Konami had taken more time with this, because I'm way into where this could've taken the Metal Gear franchise, but I don't think there's a chance in hell of the single-player campaign telling the sort of compelling story I've been writing in my head since the first trailer that showed off the campaign. I mean, once you start playing with alternate dimensions, parallel universes or anomalous timelines, you really open the door to do some appropriately Kojima-esque insanity with the story and characters. Going all Sliders / Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths / Star Trek "Mirror, Mirror" with Metal Gear Solid? Fucking sign me the fuck up.

Like, what if the whole reason Snake sounded different in MGS V was because that was actually the Other world? (And if Konami really wanted to troll Kojima fans, I don't think there's a better way to do it that be all, "MGS V? Yeah, none of that shit was real. Never happened. This is the REAL motherfucking Metal Gear Solid V right here.") Or the real Snake, the David Hayter Snake, got sucked into one of those wormholes at some point and that changed the whole timeline. I don't know. I ain't no science fiction writer and trying to wrap head about the current timeline of these fucking games gives me a headache already, but there's a goldmine of wild, batshit crazy things you could do with presenting alternate/parallel universes. And I think Konami could possibly engender some goodwill by having a David Hayter-voiced Snake show up somewhere during the campaign. If they handled it the right way, with some really good writing, I think they might actually get people excited for the next 'real' Metal Gear Solid game.

Regardless of whether or not they capitalize on the potential for the story, for what the game seems to be, the actual mechanics and gameplay, it looks like it could be fun if approached with the right attitude. I'm a sucker for games with character creation and I do love me some crafting and (within reason) survival elements, though I doubt I'd ever touch the multiplayer.

Brad and Jeff pretty much summed it up perfectly:

"I really want to play this game and I can't quite figure out why."

"It's a strange fucking thing."

Man, I found this video to be a bummer. Yeah, it's using a fantastic engine, but to what end? Poking idiot enemies with a stick through an eight foot wide fence that they should easily be able to walk around?

What made MGS5 great was the wide array of interesting tools to use, the intuitiveness and variety in using them, and enemies capable enough to demand creativity in utilizing your toolbox. None of that is demonstrated here.

Have you ever played MGS V weeks after it was released? They patched it and made it so you had to participate actively in FOB online missions or it froze your ingame money and put it in the literal red. When I patched the game it told me I was now no longer able to purchase simple in game items because I had no money according to the game. This was how Konami "fixed' their economy and it was brilliant. Wait for the game to be fully and completely reviewed, get more sales in, then change how the game works weeks after release.

First off, I can't believe Brad just ignored Jeff's DOTA2 reference at 13:54. Secondly, how much of the demo was spent demonstrating the various real-world currency shit they've obviously created this frame of a game around? (edit: touched on at ~25min mark)

I've seen a few trailers before and It really looks quite good. This really could be fun, especially since it's 40$ instead of full 60. I'm more interested in singleplayer portion but I could see myself getting into this. It's definitely going on my wishlist and maybe on sale I'll check it out, gotta clear that backlog. I'm not much into survival games but I love crafting in games and spent a ton of hours in stuff like minecraft, terraria and fallout 4 base building. This seems alright.

With the recent news of this game having both microtransactions and being forced-online all the time, in addition to everything we already know about this, it just keeps looking better and better. Definitely preordering this one.

@kishinfoulux said:

Let's see how many people hate on this irrationally, because of Konami.

Yeah man. Not like it has things everyone fuckin hates nowadays, like microtransactions and forced-online single player mode. Not like there's not a million boring-ass survival/crafting games that feature most of these exact mechanics. Not like it's boring, generic looking shit made on the name of a belovedly innovative and fantastic staple of video games since the fucking late 90s and PS1.

Nope, they just hate it irrationally because "Konami". I mean it's even a survival game with zombies! How original and fresh!

Please do inform me of those million survival crafting games that have all of these same mechanics. Because as far as I've found (and I've searched a lot), I've yet to find a single survival game that has actual structure to it and isn't just "I dunno, survive???", doesn't require you to deal with other people that you'll randomly come across (and be murdered by 95% of the time) and don't have shitty gameplay mechanics and shitty combat.

Dunno, it seems alright? Metal Gear with Zombies and without the actual Metal Gears. The only thing this game needs is an actual engine that can support hundreds of moving entities and the Mechs to stomp them.

This and They are Billions are basically the signals that Zombies are coming back big time, too. Its not like this is a bad thing. Some Zombie games exist to have a brilliant time with, lots of L4D players and modders agree.

And if not, its not like that many care about Zombies anyway. A game like They are Billions isn't selling that fantastically, either. Its fun to see how this game is going to be recieved at any case.

Looks interesting I'll say. The Metal Gear name seems to hinder more than it helps though. If they're just gonna go into an alternate dimension with its own jargon, I'd rather they make a completely new IP with a unique world with unique enemies rather than this weird conceit with crystal military zombies and crystal metal gear monsters. Plus it only pisses off MGS fans.

It's going to hurt it in terms of people who would be looking for it anyway, or who want a new experience, but it'll help in terms of name recognition - people just seeing it and going "Oh, it's the next Metal Gear game". (Hypothetical: would GB bother doing an Unfinished if it weren't Metal Gear? _Maybe_ not)

I look forward to enjoying another great half of an unfinished Metal Gear game.

Can you _imagine_ if they put the rough/unfinished stuff from V in here (somehow)? I imagine fan reaction to that would be pretty interesting.

Also, I think timed bonuses ARE better than straight up loot boxes; I'm not detracting from the "eugh" factor, it still sucks. But I was relieved to learn that at least.

At this point though, that's a low bar.
