this seems interesting and I obviously won't be dumb to make judgements now but from what that combat looks like...eeeeuhhgh nah not sold. I don't mind a game based around survival in the metal gear framework, I honestly don't play many of those games so this aesthetic/mgs5 engine approach might be the one I'd pick- but MAN those animations and mechanics for fighting hand to hand look so.....flat. Boring. Uninspired and I HAVE to suspect there are firearms in the game but I haven't seen any and would almost have to pass if most of the game you're scrounging for ammo desperately Last of Us style. I don't need a third person L4D, but I do need the guns from metal gear. I expect they have to be behind a couple hours of gameplay but those zombies look wack, and I really don't have enough to be excited by here. Here's hoping though!

Sorry but to me this still looks a lot like one of those asset-flip survival games on Steam but this time the assets being flipped were taken from MGSV. There's no unique style whatsoever, everything feels like a generic survival game made in Asia with aded microtransactions. It just looks and feels bad overall, and I'm not even comparing it with Metal Gear, it just feels that way on it's own.

I think the only good redeeming quality this game has going for it is the usage of the FOX Engine.

I'll wait for MGS Battle Royale.

I feel like this could be great if the map was populated with bases that had AI guards. Do you go in and shoot the place up for good weapons, but give away your position? Do you try to sneak past so the guards can kill some of your competitors?

And then of course the circle narrows down to a warehouse full of boxes 20 of them have players hiding inside of them.

There's still something fascinating about this, but it really does seem like they just took all the most interesting mechanics away from what MGSV was. All but removing the stealth and enemy AI aspects and reducing most of the combat down to hordes of mindless zombies seems like almost the complete antithesis of what made MGSV so much fun to play. I hope I'm wrong, but unless the game drastically changes as it gets deeper in I'll definitely be passing on it.

So this is like the Majora's Mask to MGSV's Ocarina of Time?

It really does seem like it - the follow-up to a cool game with a ton of potential that completely fails to capitalise upon any of that. :D

I think that "revival pill" thing is a red flag for anyone who has ever played a mobile game. I guess Jeff and I had the same thought because I could hear the skepticism in his voice at 27:45. Look at that whole interface and how it asks you to confirm if you want to use up one of your revival pills or to "give up". They'll be selling you those for sure.

Somehow they have managed to remove every single system from mgsv that made me enjoy it.

If it had an injury model similar to Robinsons Requiem then I might be back on board, there's nothing quite like a game letting you chop your own limbs off.

Seems interesting, but I don't like the story setup of the game taking place in another dimension or whatever. Not unless it ties into Death's Stranding.

Man, I found this video to be a bummer. Yeah, it's using a fantastic engine, but to what end? Poking idiot enemies with a stick through an eight foot wide fence that they should easily be able to walk around?

What made MGS5 great was the wide array of interesting tools to use, the intuitiveness and variety in using them, and enemies capable enough to demand creativity in utilizing your toolbox. None of that is demonstrated here.

I mean, this is early game? It has like tons of crazy shit in the trailers, so it will ramp to that.

This.

It's like they took everything I hate about games and made it into one game. Crafting? Check. Base building? Check. Zombies? Check. Microtransactions? Check. Timed boost microtransactions? Check. Multiple depleting meters to have to incessantly monitor? Check. Persistent status ailments? Check. Layers upon layers of bullshit "resources" you need to find/grind? Check. Story that's virtually nonexistent out of sheer laziness? Check.

I have little to no fanboyism when it comes to Metal Gear/Kojima, but this sure does looks like steamtrash in a MGSV wrapper.

Weird that they didnt give Brad a later character to play around with. For a game thats about using multiple tools to survive a zombie attack, having reviewers show off 1 weapon & a fence seems dissapointing.

Obligatory "Konami wined-and-dined Giant Bomb for positive coverage!" comment.

Game looks kind of thin. The loop of loot-plant-fence-poke already looks dull. Then again, I've never been into these crafting games (excluding Fallout 4 if that counts). And if you are into that, just wait for State of Decay 2.

Absolutely no way I'm going to play this. It looks fine, a bit generic, but fine. But after what Konami did to Kojima and his team I'm definitely not giving Konami my money. If anything I'll just go back and play some more MGSV.

I played the game for the first time last month and I have no idea what you're talking about?

That never happened to me and I never participated/needed to engage with the FOB system (other than the one they require you to build as part of the store)

@rasrimra said:

This looks like a trap. This game could be so easily exploited by Konami. So many things ticking down that they could let tick down a little too fast to get you to spend some money to temporarily fix the game for you.

Also considering the pretty high MGS standards, I'm pretty concerned about the characters and story seeming to be as good as absent. The enemies seem less interesting too. I hope there will be more enemy types because if it's like this all the way through it looks basically like an asset flip.

Have you ever played MGS V weeks after it was released? They patched it and made it so you had to participate actively in FOB online missions or it froze your ingame money and put it in the literal red. When I patched the game it told me I was now no longer able to purchase simple in game items because I had no money according to the game. This was how Konami "fixed' their economy and it was brilliant. Wait for the game to be fully and completely reviewed, get more sales in, then change how the game works weeks after release.

I liked the systems in Metal Gear Solid V because it was a fun push and pull against the enemy AI. The soldiers were perfectly set up to goof on and take advantage of their intellect/ intentional lack there of in fun ways. Brad's idea of improvising is what made MGSV fun for me, while this seems less like the type of improvised gameplay I'd enjoy. The zombies in this game just look like the soldiers who were infected by the SKULLS and given a re-skin, complete with the same or very similar growling sounds.

You're probably right but in the beta at least they are also craftable (I was able to make 2 after a few hours of play) and you get one as a "daily reward" login bonus type thing. They also aren't essential at all, at least in co-op from what I've seen. It remains to be seen how they'll implement microtransactions but at least there aren't loot boxes I guess :/

I'm not gonna try to white knight this game and say everyone should play it, but I'm gonna pick it up. The co-op is a lot of fun and I have at least one friend who is also getting it, so there's that. But it's also very competently made by the looks of it. Like the story setup is garbage, and they didn't do themselves any favors by leading with that instead of gameplay trailers. But you can tell that they are actually trying to make something fun and engaging, while also being different from MGSV.

tl;dr: The loop of building a base in single player while going into co-op for more resources/shenanigans that carry over back into single player seems like a lot of fun to me. But I'm also dreading the Konami suits fucking things up like they did with V post release.

The single player part of this actually looks pretty fun, such a shame it's online only.
If only they'd add a offline profile that doesn't require online I'd actually buy this.

I gotta say, it's really quite frustrating seeing some people in the comments acting almost holier than thou about others disliking it because of 'the salt' and 'just because of Konami' or because Kojima isn't involved. It's more than that, and trying to sweep anyone that doesn't like it into that group isn't right.

I personally think Kojima is a fucking hack, but Metal Gear is a historied franchise at this point and this treatment is, in my opinion, a lot like Silent Hill Pachinko. There is so obviously no creative influence on this at all, it's a game by numbers designed by suits in an executive board room looking at video game trends over the last several years in order to pull money for cheap on a brand name. I would absolutely have no problem with this if it just didn't have the Metal Gear name attached to it. I don't like survival games regardless, but any game running the FOX Engine would deserve at least a look. But this blatant, unashamed asset flip is such a slap in the face, and it really grinds my gears seeing people being belittled because of their principles regarding consumerism.

For whatever reason, I totally forgot about this so seeing the unfinished was quite a pleasant surprise.
Then I realized that the game will be out like next month, even better of a surprise! Still got bummed out that the beta won't be available on PC.

Had so much fun with MGSV, warts and all, that I'm really looking forward to this.

@joestate said:

I had it on in the background while making my daughter dinner and for some reason the audio looped with brad saying “basically if your hunger drops to 40 that’s the max your health can be, stamina” but the video kept playing.

It rolled that way for almost two minutes! I have no idea why my phone decided to troll me like that but I reloaded it and it was fine.

Also I want to play this

Your phone wanted to tell you that if your daughter's hunger drops to 40 she won't get any more stamina and her health won't be getting any better. Guess it's a smart phone? *ba-dum-tshh*

Not just what Konami did with regards to the Kojima Productions team (not just the guy himself), but we really shouldn't forget that Konami treats its employees like trash.

Sometimes ethical consumerism is hard. Everybody has to eat, for example, and sometimes that means buying into a company's shitty practices due to cost or availability or what-have-you. But you don't have to give an entertainment company money while they treat people badly. If you care about treating people decently, you should not buy games from Konami.

(And to forestall the tired and obvious: quitting a salaryman position in Japan is historically, though it's slowly changing, a kiss-of-death type of situation and so "well why don't they just quit" can turn sideways and return to where it came from, thanks.)

@wobblysnake: I don’t know if I’d call the guy a hack.. He is largely responsible for those games and Survive is a great example that assets and an engine will only get you so far without good creative direction.

@rekatil: I should have specified that I played the game at launch and by then put 50 hours into the game. By the I've accumulated a massive amount of GMP and played the passive aspect of the FOB missions sending people out to do missions this required last I checked an online connection. I built maybe one or two FOBs. I would play online occasionally but I usually kept the game offline At some point a large update came though and I held off on updating and set the game aside.

It was after an update that somehow my available funds were untouchable and require that I log in and interact with FOB missions or play some filler missions to get out of the red or my soldiers will start leaving in mass essentially slowing my progress.
