Unfinished: PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (Xbox One) 12/12/17

Jeff and Jason take a trip to Murder Island. Watch them as they make sick jumps, light fires, and throw some blows in this early access version of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds on the Xbox One!

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

@xbob42: I guess. I have a 970 and every match I have to wait 2-5 minutes for all the textures to load. This is already an improvement.

this whole borderline-trainwreck of an early access release seems to be culmination of microsoft showing off PUBG as a first serve console exclusive back at E3 and probably expecting the game to came out (in any shape or form it seems) before the end of year, + bluehole's main priority being getting the PC version out of early access and into 1.0 before the end of the year at the same time.

the performance upgrade on PC between previous versions and the new test server/1.0 sampler is indisputable, so they have clearly been productive and busy on getting the game ironed out.

nothing about the performance of the game on xbox actually suggests anything about what pubg means as a console game just yet (other than, its development is being a bit neglected while pc is still the focus.. but again, it's not hard to imagine this will improve over time).

kind of silly to think that microsoft can toot their own horn at game expos and awards shows and talk in interviews about having PUBG first as a console exclusive before PS4, when all that means is the xbox userbase is getting a bad first impression at an un-optimised mess while PS4 will probably have a smoother package delivered come their release.

My thoughts exactly. This all just comes back to bite Microsoft in the ass. So much (economics notwithstanding) for "exclusivity".

And that's the game running on the X!

Meanwhile, me on the S:

It's basically a Spectrum port of an NES game right now.

It's still frequently great fun - In one of my first matches I dumped a clip in the vague direction of someone close by and he did the same. Neither of us hit due to the appalling framerate, and neither of us could figure out what the reload button was. After about 10 seconds of us nuzzling each other cutely, I figured it out. Wish I'd captured it.

Is this the first instance of early access on consoles?

No, Microsoft has had the Game Preview thing going for awhile now. Ark, The Happy Few, and a few other games have been early access on Xbox One.

Xbox's Game Preview Program has actually existed since 2015, and launched with The Long Dark and Elite Dangerous.

As someone with a PC below the minimum specs, this has been great fun. I think Jeff's analysis is a bit off due to his vast experience with the game. This is my first PUBG experience - and it's totally fine. I think people are just happy it's on the console right now and I'm not put off by its problems. I think it's definitely more off-putting to people who have played the PC version and know better. Also, Xbox Live is surely going to be better placed to counteract cheaters.

Damn, you guys can step back from the ledge a little bit. It's early access, and while it has obvious problems, it is still playable. If you're that bothered by it, you can wait until they improve it or play it on PC.

I feel like a console BR game needs to be built for console first, not adapted from PC.

It's been a double whammy for me, getting used to precision controller aiming and a bad framerate has been hard. I could adjust to either on its own, but it's been rough adjusting for both, coming from PC. I get that is what the consoles are capable of, but I have very few opportunities to own the PC and console version of something, so it's been an experience.

It's everything I love about PUBG, but with bad controls and less than half the framerate. I picked it up to play with my non-PC friends. I'm on an X and a 4k TV. It's like playing at a high resolution but on low settings, so there isn't even the benefit of it looking better while running poorly. Also I haven't seen this level of UE texture pop-in in a very long time.

Regarding "it's just early access", that's what the point of Unfinished is. They're showing you the game experience as of 12/12/17. This is what you can spend your money on right now. Once MS and Bluehole started accepting money (the full price) for this version, it can be judged just as critically as something people can buy right now.

I'm coming at this as someone with like 100 hours on the PC version, so it could be a great experience if you have nothing to compare it to.

@mems1224: not even remotely normal, you have another issue going on and one that is not representative of the typical PUBG PC experience

good old texture pop-in though, that used to plague Unreal 3 games

In fairness, the game is being 1.0 released this year on PC, and the Xbox release is an early access version.

But I get your point.

Stupid Skyrim.

Hitting "O" on a keyboard plugged into your xbox shows the graphics settings menu from PC. You cant change anything, but it shows that S is on Very Low and X is on Medium.

Not sure if they show it on this video, haven't had a chance to watch.

Game Preview = beta, just like Elite Dangerous in Game Preview on Xbox was initially crashy and buggy and laggy.

Just because you have 100 players, you don't have to update [stuff] on all the players. Just players within a set range. I'm sure there will be optimizations.

I'm just watching the video, but try running the game on a similarly specced PC and see how it runs.

Seems so weird Jeff is bashing this since this is (surely?) their game of the year and they loved it in the past. This runs much better than I expected given Unreal Engine and all the talk in the Bombcast.

That is definitely weird, but it wouldn't be PC gaming without something like that happening for no apparent reason.

A similarly specced PC would be an AMD RX 580, which has no problem running PUBG. If you mean similarly priced, then it will still run better than this.

The PS4 and Xbox One (including the X) have poor CPUs. The bottom of the barrel Pentium G440 has more CPU horsepower than the Xbox One and PS4. This is speculated by Digital Foundry to be the reason why Destiny 2 still can't reach 60 FPS on consoles.

Then your PC must be a real piece of trash. This video showed performance and visuals that were completely unacceptable. I don't imagine any amount of time in early access is going to make it a locked 30, which is already pretty bad for a shooter.

People have different standarts, no need to be all agro about it.

Maybe it's because i've been played ARMA for years consistently sub 30 fps on a shitty rig but its always super weird to me when people act like low frames are fingernails on a chalkboard to them.. and i feel even weirder that it feels like this is half the conversations about games now, lol.. I get that 60 fps feels the best and when something is WILDLY changing framerates it takes longer to adjust but it seems like even a few dips or sub 30 frames are actually physically making some people motion sick or something? Jason in this video sounded like he was going to wretch and he is definitely not alone..

My old desktop PC wasn't very good, but it was still way more powerful than any of the current gen consoles. PUBG ran horribly on it. A lot of this footage reminds me of how PUBG on that PC looked, since they're probably using the lowest quality settings.

Honestly that drop in to the map, with the exception of the mini map which i've never had issues with, is better then it is for me on my PC (GTX 960, i5-4670). I still get the thing where I have like a 50/50 chance whether the buildings load in fine or are giant untextured messes that I can't enter for 30-60 seconds until they load.

That... those visuals, frame rate, and controls are some hot garbage! Even lower-end PC's play PUBG better than that--with a mouse and keyboard!

I knew going in that the "most powerful console ever" still wasn't going to deliver PC performance or graphics, but... Yikes!

I shudder to imagine what Microsoft paid to get PUBG on Xbox first, and feel even worse for people thinking they could pick up an Xbox because they wanted to play PUBG (especially if they've been watching streamers play on Twitch on mouse/keyboard at 100+ fps and lush graphics).

I have this on PC running with a 1080 at 60fps, so I figured I'd try it out on the Xbox One (no X) just to see if I could play it with my friends.

This game looks AWFUL and runs terribly on Xbox One. It often times has such jittery frame rate and dips so low (15fps or so), I get a headache playing the game, several sections are so dark (no brightness settings and I have my monitor all the way up) you can't see anything, and it's often hard to tell where people are at on the screen.

The controls are super sluggish, and feel like I'm driving a tank. And don't even get me started on inventory management - it's the worst I've seen in a game, whereas PC is drag-and-drop. Game is a mess.

The difference is Halo ran at a stable 30fps. Stability is the key, this dips all over the play and is headache-inducing.

I really appreciate that they are using the most powerful console in the world, but they've kept the aesthetic of woefully underpowered, old pc trying to run a modern game.

At least the cheating might be slightly more controllable on console?

I can totally understand Jeff's criticisms, and yeah they probably should have held off on putting this out for a few more months to continue optimizing it, but as someone who's never played on PC, this version is already a lot of fun.

Excited to see how it improves going forward, but for now I'm just happy that I can finally squad up for some chicken dinner with my buds.

I always knew PUBG was going to be a big ask, performance-wise, on console. This is no surprise. Even with continued performance improvements (and the game has improved on PC lately — try the test server!), I suspect locked-30 is going to be the best case scenario for console.
