Unfinished: RimWorld 08/03/2016

No raiders better show their faces around here or we'll make them some comfortable lodgings.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Insane how much of the art and sounds are ripped from Prison Architect.

Other than that, it looks super cool.

I was just about to write the exact same thing. I even checked if it's just the same dev. (It's not.)

Yeah dwarf fortress-like, but not sure what this is offering more than prison architect, which they have clearly lifted an art style from.

Other then fictional concept which is more appealing than a prison, I'd say meh.

@asmo917: I had a mad tortoise attack my town just yesterday. The first hostile encounter I ever had in the game, it was nerve racking.

Mad Tortoise.

@bill_mcneal: I would highly recommend (again) Chris Remo's streams from Idle Thumbs. I found another YouTuber first who had some good tips but was super...YouTube-ish and I had to tap out. Remo's streams are great, with the occasional design insight.

I love this game so much. The "see how far I can get before it all burns down" aspect is great. Randy Random/Challenging/Permadeath FOREVER

Oof, naturally everyone is all about "hey this looks like Prison Architect!" If that's you, STOP! This game is nothing like Prison Architect, it's actually fun to play and doesn't depress the shit out of you!

Drew is really noob at this game.

<snip a bunch of stuff>

oh god, "seems pretty polished for early access" this is probably like 400 version, and the game has been around for years and years....

Yeah, it's crazy that he didn't know everything about the game after a few hours of play. Git good, Drew!

All this video does for me is make me want to get back into Dwarf Fortress.

I can see this game's place though. Simpler and more focused at the cost of depth, which is a trade-off I'm sure most people will be okay with.

I also thought that this game was way thinner than DF, but that's not actually true. For the most part, the stuff that this game omits is in the name of fun (lower case 'f' fun). Managing ammo, seeds, etc. And, the rest of the world outside your map is largely non-existant. The only important thing it's missing are z-levels, which would change the nature of the game fundamentally, I think.

@asmo917: does he mention that the developer used to be a coworker of his? Seems a little " insider trading" if he didn't.

@murdoc_: Yeah, Chris mentioned it a few times on stream. The developer even popped into his chat once during a stream. Pretty great watch.

I picked the game up from quill18 on YT. He does amazingly well on extreme, not YouTubery, and explains his decisions pretty well as he plays.

@pkmnfrk: Visually, it's completely lifted Prison Architect. I think that is a fair comparison.

@murdoc_: Sure, it looks like it. But I'm saying that is a superficial comparison and not representative of the game, which is maybe 5% like PA

This never really gets to the exciting parts, this game plays out a bit like FTL in terms of trying to manage things in combat and loosing characters. If you start playing this expect to spend at least half the time thinking "if only i started over I would do this so much better" as well, the game is a lot of trying to do your best, learning a lot and trying again.
