Ok, Early Access is one thing but this might have been a bit too early...

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

The positive reviews for this on Steam are almost as funny as that glitch at the end.

Holy shit you can pay $300 to talk to him for 3 hours about how he made the game http://ructiongames.com/how-to-make-this-game/

I think the $300 might be more his fee for telling us how he got this ... thing ... through Greenlight.

@kherven: That was pretty much exactly the point I tried to make in the comments of Dan's Stardew Valley review and nobody agreed with me. It's a product, it should be judged on the quality of what's being sold.

To add to the points on this, it is made worse by what another commenter noticed. On their site you can purchase, for $300, a sit-down with the developer on how he made this 'game'. In his own words he said it was the first thing he ever made, it was done in 5 months, and the most he had toyed with other systems before that was a few random engines for less than a week. Now he wants to charge $300 to tell you about that for 3 hours.

That alone makes me feel grimy and I think something like this will hopefully stop more people from buying it in the state it is in.

Don't worry though, if you do spend the $300 you will get a key for the game.

http://ructiongames.com/how-to-make-this-game/

@rigas said:

And charging a LOT of money too. You can get A LOT on Steam for €10 these days. Now I know one person team and all that. Well done for their hard effort. But you can also have it free or $1. Like they said pricing it at 10 puts a value on the work.

Haven't watched the QL yet, but from what I know of this game (which isn't much at this point) I really hope that the GBEast guys mention that this entire game is the work of one dude. One guy made it, so, cut it a bit of slack if it's super EARLY ACCESS etc :)

Nope! (S)He's charging money for it so (s)he gets no slack. If you're over at a friend's house and they're cooking dinner for you, you got no right to complain if it's not great. If you're at a restaurant and pay for your food and the food sucks, you have every right to complain. "Oh but we just opened and there is only 1 cook" doesn't matter, once you start charging money for your product, it better be good.

1 or 20 people, this game deserves the buyer beware it got because charging money for this "game" is dishonest. This isn't early access, this is a concept.

I think the SDV dev deserves praise for creating such a great product all by himself. The key there is "creating a great product." SDV is good because its good, not because of the team size. Whether it was made by the 1 dev or by a small team, it was well worth its $15 price tag. So yeah, I don't think small/1 man team can be used as an excuse for a bad or overpriced product. Even when games like SDV pull it off, it doesn't make the product better but it does make it more impressive.

Unity Consultation - How I built this game

I will tell you the steps I took and learned while building this game. I never programmed before and installed Unity game engine just 5 months before “completing” this game. There is a lot of stuff that I wish I knew before I started and I’ve learned TONS of techniques, pitfalls, things to avoid, things to definitely do, what assets to acquire and a ton more. You will be paying for 2-3 hours of talk time with me, the creator of Ruction: The Golden Tablet. I didn’t know any programming in C# or Javascript when I started. I will tell you how I managed to build this 3D open world adventure game in less than 5 months (I’ve spent another couple months on top of this on detail polishing), and how I got my game on Steam Greenlight AND greenlit in less than three weeks. I will tell you the exact marketing I did and things I wish I had know before I started building this game. By the way, if you didn’t know by now, I made this whole game by myself, just me, one person, and I started building this game just a couple days after installing Unity for the first time. I had used a couple game engines a few months before for maybe a week or so, but that’s about all the previous game building experience I have had. I will also of course throw in a steam game key for the game. The game is now early access and available for download here or on Steam.

I look forward to speaking with you all about my game and what I did to make it happen!

$300

This is amazing. I love how terrible this all is.

The fact that Steam allows them to sell this garbage for $10 is sort of sickening.

Eh, play it less than 2 hours and get a refund. It works out!

This game and some other things around it suggest to me it was made by someone trying to make a quick buck by abusing the early access system. What's sad is that it will probably make some amount of money and I suspect the person who "made" it spent nothing doing so so anything it makes is profit.

If I had no soul and didn't care about anything I would do this type of scam. It's apparently just that easy.

Wow. I was kinda with the people saying you shouldn't pick on this game until I saw that. Guy clearly has an inflated sense of what he's accomplished. Don't get me wrong, kudos to him for making it alone and learning everything from scratch, but selling his time for $100/hr.? Nah man. Put that time into learning something about design and storytelling. Fix the bugs and finish the game. Because this smells a lot like abandoning the game to make a quick buck.

@haychew21: Judging by the sales pitch of the consultation, that 3 hours is probably just 10-20 minutes of information that he rambles on repeatedly until time is up.

As a game developer myself it's always fun deducing what engine and assets were used to make a game like this from the QL alone. In this case that options menu was a dead giveaway that it's made in Unity.

The developer also said in a dev vlog that the game was "finished... for the most part" and he's just play testing and polishing it. D:

This is obviously his first game ever and I think he has done a great job in that regard, but in my opinion your first work(s) of anything should never ever be sold because this will only hurt you in the long run.

Your first works will always be bad and trying to sell them for a profit only makes you look like a greedy arrogant scammer. You should use your first few games instead to learn from and build an audience for yourself for when you actually make something half decent that's actually worth selling.

This particular example is even more abominable because the developer is trying to sell a three hours of "consultation" on how to create this garbage for $300 on his website! Which is probably just him telling you where to buy / download all the assets he used for the game.

I kind of feel bad for the guy because I know what it's like to be such a newbie, but I'd have a lot more pity for him if he wasn't trying to profit so hard off of this junk.

TL;DR Great first game, horrible idea to sell it.

Not sure what the lesson there is. They got a quicklook, I'm assuming Vinny paid money, and it will probably spawn every other site and nannering on twitch streamer to try the same to mock it.

Mission accomplished I'd say, which leads me to believe the game industry is now a sinking cesspit.

I'm pretty sure they, as well as most big game reviewers have Steam press accounts which allow them to play all (I think) games that are on Steam without having to pay for them. I imagine if they had to pay for them, most reviewers probably wouldn't touch any of these low effort asset flip indie games.

If this were a free game someone was making as a hobby this video would've been too harsh. As it stands, the person is asking money for it, so it can and should be criticized as a commercial product. Solo development is absolutely not an excuse to sell a subpar product to people. Oh, and don't be fooled by apparent effort that went into this. I am willing to bet that most graphical assets here are just premades bought or stolen from the Unity store, because this happens all the time with bad games made in Unity.

As far as I'm concerned, Early Access and Greenlight are both failed systems that many so called developers have taken advantage of to push out objective garbage on Steam Store, which may then be bought by clueless people. Especially when the creators of such trash employ disingenuous methods to promote their games such as posting fake reviews or vote boosting (this has happened many many times). I'd go as far as to say such a state of affairs is damaging to the industry and the consumers. Videos like these serve well to highlight this problem.

Also, 300 bucks to talk to the genius behind this about his unfinished terrible game? How arrogant is that?

Pretty sure we had numbers a while back showing that "so bad we're gonna stream them" games don't get significant or even noticeable sales boosts from streams. There's not enough streamers to make a difference in sales, and people watching tend to just laugh at the game and move on.

@gunflame88 For the low low cost of just $300 the developer will tell you exactly which unity assets he bought/stole to make this "game". @that_lamer QUIET YOU FOOL! If you just tell people what he used to make this game with you'll ruin his scam... um.. legit business strategy!
