Unfinished: Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth 09/25/2014

Why waste your time researching how to send a poet when you can build sweet space guns?

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

That upgrade web looks almost identical to the one in Endless Space. I don't even think this is a bad thing. Endless Space has pretty awesome depth with no on-planet combat, something Civ does well. I'm really excited for this game.

I hope my laptop can't run this game, it'll give me a good excuse to do things like "be productive" and "go outside."

Assuming there isn't an earlier tech tree that both are culling from, I think the right way to look at this is it's incredibly flattering for Amplitude Studios to have none other than Firaxis utilize similar iconography for their tech tree.

To be honest, I was a lot more excited about this game until I found out that it is essentially a Civ 5 mod. It's not that Civ 5 is a bad game, but they adhered to the formula so exactly, and it seems like other than the differences in setting and the orbital layer, it's pretty much the same game. You're building outposts instead of cities. You're doing pretty standard Civ diplomacy, just with green dudes. I mean, they even left in trade routes.

Maybe I haven't been following it closely enough, but I had gotten the impression (maybe just from the title) that perhaps you would be doing interplanetary travel. Managing different civilizations on planets with completely different kinds of resources and species seemed like a really cool prospect. But no, they just stick you on "not Earth" and changed the names and art for some stuff. Well, I'm sure it's deeper than that, but it doesn't feel much deeper.

All that being said... I'll probably buy this anyway. I like Civ a lot, and I don't know how many hours I whiled away playing sci-fi mods of Civ 2 in my youth. I'm just a little bummed they didn't get more creative with the formula when they had a chance.

I thought this game was going to be more about being in Space like Endless Space is. This is just a reskinned Civ turned Sci Fi. I'd probably just stick with Civ5 with all the expansions rather then jump into another base game that plays that same that I'll have to get a bunch more expansions for.

This looks like more Civ so I am totally going to get this. I look forward to sinking a lot of hours into it like I did Civ V. Also I can totally understand what Alex and VInny are saying about the "just one more turn thing" I have said that so many times and then the next thing I know it's 2am and I haven't eaten all day.

Yeah, by no means am I claiming that Firaxis ripped them off, They are both very different when it comes to gameplay..

I just started getting into Civilization, and I feel like this is so much cooler and more up my alley. I feel like I wasted money on Civ 5 and should've waited. (but that's silly 'cause I'll probly play both)

I'm excited about Beyond Earth.

This doesn't seem to really have what made the original Alpha Centauri unique, but it never really had that stuff. There WERE things that made the original feel very different from Civilization, but to be fair I don't think stuff like that was really ever in the stars for this title.

Get it?

I definitely wish they had made better use of the more unique unit features of AC. And maybe even went back to a square grid. I miss being able to make essentially custom units.

Man, this looks kind of crappy. I wanted to play a cool deep strategy game where you build a space colony, not some lame turn-based space combat game. Maybe this QL isn't representative of all the game has to offer but it really turned me off from the game. I have Civ V and all its expansions to finally dive into. I was waiting to be sold on this but I guess I'll go back and play that instead.

You do realize that every Civ game is turn based, don't you? Don't call the game crappy because you don't like the genre of the game.

Seems like a real interesting take on a tech tree. Can't wait to try this out for myself.

This seem like how they used the Civ4 engine to remake Colonization, which isn't a bad thing at all. I quite liked that remake.

If it's just one planet per game that sounds kind of boring. I wish Firaxis could get the Emperor of the Fading Suns property and remake that in this engine.

Sister Miriam was the Ghandi of Alpha Centuri, I'm pretty sure they programmed her to try to get planet busters as soon as she could.

I always played the spartans, and took her out fast, or, in Alien Cross Fire, the pirates, or the Over powered aliens.

What struck me at first was actually how little I was excited seeing this at first, I think partly because it seems the personalities are buried during the game setup. What makes Civ for me and I'm sure many others is not only the design but the story of playing a particular Civ and taking the role of that Civ leader. I assume that'll be a non-issue when I sit down and play.

That and Civ V has really done an exquisite job with all its cinematics and narration to get you into playing that game and like Vinny I look forward to whatever Firaxis has cooked up for this.

However the more I watched the more I not only got into it anyway as more Civ but noticed all the little things, like the orbital layer, that I bet are actually going to go a long way to make this game compelling in its own right.

Completely got that vibe after watching this Quick Look, too. I enjoyed my time with Civilization V, so playing more of it with a different skin isn't really a bad thing -- I just thought there'd be more to it...

Maybe look into Galactic Civilizations II (GalCiv III will be released next year). It has the depth that I think you are looking for.

@luck702: I just don't like how many dumb barbarian-type units there are. I like building a city and civilization, that's kind of the point. This greater emphasis on combat just doesn't interest me very much, especially when it doesn't seem like there are many tactical decisions to make.

I played a lot of Alpha Centauri and Civ 4. I put a lot of hours into Civ 5, but it didn’t feel the same, and sadly, this plays too much like Civ 5.

The secret projects and terraforming and social engineering in Alpha Centauri, man I miss those game elements.
