Unfinished: Sid Meier's Civilization VI 10/03/2016

Queen Victoria knows the deal. The first one to gunpowder wins. Plain and simple.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Long live King Roosevelt.

I prefer playing the Civ games when all the expansions for a particular installment are out. Civ IV and V both had some issues at launch that were remedied by expansions. But maybe VI will be different.

I saw the thumbnail of the woman and honestly thought it was some re-imagining of BioShock Infinite's Elizabeth as an older woman.

Yeah i see it too, EL the greatest Civ game ever made. Looking forward to seeing if this is as good.

I think I see a little Endless Legend influence in this new Civ.

That's a good thing, EL was a breath of fresh air to the 4X genre.

We Scythians loathe rainbows. #sworcery

I'd ship saucy Queen Victoria and Teddy Roosevelt. That sounds like power couple that would destroy everything.

I have to say the color pallet and iconography of cities, wonders, and units turns me off. It all looks like a badly scaled mish-mash because they want everything visible at a glance...which I just don't feel is necessary if the glance you get is fuggly.

This aesthetic quibble is entirely personal, but I really liked how Civ 5 smoothed out civs' cultural borders and made improvements on tiles overlap naturally onto adjacent tiles. Every randomly generated world felt like a real place, and not just a bunch of randomly arranged tiles.

The cultural borders in Civ 6, on the other hand, are razor sharp and you could park a bus in the gaps between improvements -- look at this screenshot! It looks like someone plopped a couple of random wonders onto a Settlers of Catan board. The gaps between them are too large to make it feel like they're part of a coherent city.

That being said, the gameplay changes look really intriguing and I'm excited to try it out at some point.

I like bits of the aesthetic, the fog map and character models for the world leaders are nice, the rest looks like a dry board game, it's flat. The readability is nice but there's no atmosphere or mood.

Boy, this looks pretty good gameplay wise. Every time Alex mentioned one of the new mechanics / changes, I nodded silently to myself.

Looks okay. Looks competent. Looks like they made more Civ. Kind of makes me wish they would try something a little more daring with the series. I'm guessing that Beyond Earth was that experiment and it didn't work out as well as they were hoping, but I hope that doesn't put an end to the experimentation.

The political interactions with the other leaders seems to be just about the same as in Civ 5, and those were quite shallow in my opinion. For something that is supposed to be about intrigue, scheming and strategy, it felt more like accounting. 5 good points - 3 bad points = friend. Same goes for trading and economy.

As Vinny mentioned and I have always felt, having religion and culture as two different systems, trying to spread both around without any interaction between the two has always seemed to me like having systems for the sake of having systems. Doesn't look like they made many changes to that either.

It's good that they have taken building out from just one tile and spread it around the map a little bit. I've always found it irritating not being able to build harbour on a coastal tile within my territory, or a canal, or use rivers as roads for boat transport, but it doesn't look like that is possible in this version either. Having airports outside of cities would be nice too. Or hotels and something like tourist attraction sites. I wonder how tourism works in this version?

Is there migration?

Knowing the release cycle of Civ 5 it might be worth waiting for the inevitable expansions.

It's interesting how Vinny keeps asking whether you can automate this or automate that. This is an indication that those aspects of the game are not enjoyable (at least for him) and I would agree. Having to micromanage your workers can sometimes be annoying. Like if you're fighting a world ending battle and you get interrupted from making battle plans only to tell your worker to go build a lumber mill which you are never going to use anyway. It would be interesting to see how the new worker system WORKS out (pun intended).

Hmm ... strange. I really like Civ but I might be the only person here who is not very excited for the new iteration of Civ. Doesn't seem different enough. Not sure if there is any meaningful difference in the gameplay systems.

@meierthered: It actually only takes about a solid days worth of play to figure out, like a first play though of Xcom 2 or something. That being said, it WILL infect you... seriously... they don't say it's the cocaine of video games for nothing.

Very excited for this, but the UI looks incredibly ugly compared to Civ V. I hope that is going to be changed in the final version.

I don't think it will. Everything they've shown so far points in the direction of this being the aesthetic they're rolling with. CiV V's art deco inspired UI is still amazing, I agree.

I will probably play a game or two at a friend's house, but Civ IV is still king for me. I have a Caveman2Cosmos modded game running currently.

Someone probably already noted this, but the unit xp upgrading is basically exactly the same as Civ 5, just a different interface for it.

I was no fan of Civ 5 and so far Civ 6 doesn't seem to be addressing my issues with it, but rather changed other things that I can't quite tell are for the better or for the sake of change.
