Unfinished: Watch Dogs 2 09/22/2016

Dan is given amazing hacker powers to take down Big Brother, but gets distracted by CCR, flying drones, and strip clubs.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

This comes out sooner than I thought. I liked the first well enough; I wasn't someone that was super excited about it from what I've seen. I thought the first footage was cool, but the expectation of something more wasn't there for me. I ended up enjoying it, and liking the take on Chicago, even if it is unrealistic (which, I don't know if is true or not since I've never been there). I am not really interested in what I've seen from two, and haven't been keeping up on it, but I'm interested to watch this. That said, I do remember now that after I finished the first, I said to myself 'I'd like to play a sequel'. Maybe I'll get this. It's interesting that you're with Dedsec in this one.

Okay, sure.

I liked the first one and how it felt like an open world stealth game. But not too sure I want to play the sequel.

You could blow the water main at man hole covers in the first game as well. That's what happened at 29mins or so with the motorcycle.

On the car boost hacking:

After-market ECU remapping has been a thing for quite a while now--I know someone with a nineties Golf who had the engine remapped to put out more power. It's generally of limited effectiveness in naturally aspirated cars, but anything with a turbocharger - particularly turbodiesels - can generally be fiddled with quite a bit.

Obviously, this isn't really something you can do wirelessly with a smartphone as of today, but still.

That actually looked like a really fun sandbox and I'm glad it doesn't seem to be taking itself as seriously as those E3 trailers made it look.

But maaaaaaan that was some of the worst AI I've seen in a game lately. The majority of the NPCs might as well have been mannequins for how much they responded to your actions. Crazy.

The roads/sidewalks are also pretty vacant. I know having a ton of cars on the street might be a detriment to the gameplay at a point, but dang open world games take place in ghost towns.

Something about Ubisoft open world games rub me the wrong way. I can't explain it. But I was already suspicious of this game, and watching this makes me even less interested in it. And I am absolutely confident that the story is going to be cringe-inducing, but I'd like to be wrong about that.

This open world really feels empty and soul-less. It's like if you're on a movie set with elements randomly placed to resemble a street rather than an actual city. Is this a ghost town with a few mannequins instead of people? He punches a guy and he just stands there with no reaction.

Also, most of the characters feel like edgy 12-14 year olds who think the dumb stuff they're doing is deep activism to take down "The Man" or something. Everything seems too corny, feels like who worked on this game tried way to hard and seriously to be on the nose instead of actually being self-aware.

It's a shame, this could be a great funny sandbox in the style of Saint's Row but with hacking.

The graphics seems downgraded compared to the promotional footage, as usual for Ubisoft. The draw-in is strong.

Game looks kind of fun. I'm hoping that it will be a tech version of Saint's Row.

By the way guys we are sadly already at the point when hacking a car can make it faster. A lot of cars with engine computers/chips are programmed to be consumer friendly and meet fuel efficiency and emissions regulations. "Hacking" or going into the chip and changing some of the programming can make your car more aggressive and even unlock a lot of horsepower. I don't know if it can be done that fast but it's a thing. Scary, huh?

Some parts look cool but the hack culture and emote-face man turn me completely off. I'll wait for a price drop, I can still feel the burn from the first game.

@johnymyko:I expect that the PC version would bridge the graphical gap and have more dense populations.

@johnymyko: That edgey 12-14 year oldness doesn't put me off by itself, it's more the, "Awesome, bro" *fist bump* after you murdered 10 people.

Your character isn't a hacker, you're a mass murderer.

I heard somewhere that the main character here had his life ruined when ctos incorrectly identified him as a criminal. So hacking the system to do that exact thing to other random people seems like it would really be in conflict with the character. I'm interested to know if they actually address that at all. I really enjoyed Watch Dogs but the main character was a lame hypocrite. I'd like to see them do better than that.

It is different when in this, the characters are being all "yeah man justice, bring down the man, freedom to the people" and all that.

Why in this game does hacker seem to use guns, parkour, killing people with mechanical objects and bombs so much? Exactly what sort of game is Ubi trying to make? And, excalay what are they trying to say about an Oakland hacker who doesn't seem to hacks very much but kills anyone who gets in his way or even mildly inconvenienced his path from A to B?

Because it sure doesn't seem like they are making a game about hackers. I'm not saying the hackers should sit their their basement the whole game, but running people over with vehicles, electrocuting people, or parkour on their necks should be 10% instead of 90%.

What sort of logic is it to go from the very unlikable Aiden Pearce to Marcus Holloway who seems to murder people for no reason? One of the biggest issues with Aiden was he was a dick that killed people based on sketchy-logic for a revenge story, right? So why make Marcus Holloway and his friends anarchists who steal, falsely arrested, and run over people? How is taht better? How is the less disturbing? "Look you can do anything", well, thaning that inclives killing the common people in your way. You can use a runaway truck, parkour down on their spindly necks, SWAT then by falsley calling the police.... or use a gun.

WOW, WHAT A VEST SELECTION OF CHOICES!

The people behind this game are either idiots, OR are have allowed idiots to dictate what they game will be about. Maybe both...

@larmer: the whole hypocrite argument only ever works if that's how the player chose to play the game. You could totally play the whole first game without hacking innocent people or killing them or being a maniac. In fact there are a few side missions where you explicitly help people in need.

That said the whole first game revolves around a person that completely loses himself in a quest for revenge so it's not entirely out of character for him to act irrationally in order to get closer to his goal. It's the age old trope of a good guy doing bad things because he loses all perspective as a result of losing someone.

But hey man it's cool that you didn't like it, we all have our own opinions. I myself spent an irrational amount of time defending Watch Dogs when honestly who cares. The internet at large kinda made up its mind about that game. I had a lot of fun with it and that's all that should matter really, rather than me trying to convince others that it's not this or that.

Also, the guy's reaction around 9:53 makes me hopeful about the self awareness and the humor.

I love the idea that Look_At_Dogs as a franchise might go the way of Saints Row. I hope that, by the third game, we're hacking everything from buildings to #2 pencils to sandwiches, and the explanation as to how is never more detailed than "ctOS am bad!!!". If they truly embrace what they've created and lampoon hacktivism as much as possible, they could have something brilliant.

I've gotta say, though, I hope this is a super unfinished build. GTAV spoiled me somewhat, admittedly, but the open world here feels incredibly ... eh, even compared to the first game. Mainly the AI, which looks to be next-level stupid.

I'm on the complete opposite camp, I think it looks absurdly huge and most of the screen seems too cluttered with UI as usual with Ubisoft. I love me some tiny, neat and clean UI.
