Unfinished: Watch Dogs 2 09/22/2016

Dan is given amazing hacker powers to take down Big Brother, but gets distracted by CCR, flying drones, and strip clubs.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

Exactly what sort of game is Ubi trying to make?

The kind their focus group numbers say they should.

Well, it looks like the focus group might have said, "More hookers" because there were a few on view. LOL. And they showed a strip club in one of the other videos, so we know the focus group has some priorities.

I love Eric B. and Rakim and Naughty By Nature as much as the next guy but with the game being set in San Francisco they should really get some Bay Area artists in there like E-40, Spice 1, Ant Banks etc. That's why I like Rockstar's licensed soundtracks so much; they get it.

That first reveal of Watch_Dogs was so good until the shooting part but before that it looked like this cool cyberpunk-ish sort of game. It had a really cool style to it that just made it look really interesting. While the final product wasn't that at all, it does seem like they had no intention of ever making that game looking at WD2. It just looks like a GTA clone with some extra toys thrown in.

The A.I seems super broken.

Yeah, that's the same vibe I'm getting. I'm not sure if this is the right terminology, but a lot of them look like have extremely specific routines/triggers, so if you in turn don't do certain very specific things, it's like A.I. just doesn't fucking know how to deal with you and will just sit there in some weird limbo or simply revert to it's original state.

Yeah, for you guys complaining about being a mass-murderer in this, you can play the whole game non-lethally which is a real nice change of pace from the first game.

I enjoyed the gameplay of the first game, and the story was alright BUT that all could be because it was one of the first big next-gen releases. The character movement and gunplay in the first one was so much better than GTAV, that going back to that remaster it was noticeable.

This looks alright but the characters and setting just seems, like Jeff said, corny as hell.

This is starting to look like it'll be the AC 2 of the Watch_Dogs franchise.

What i want to know is what exactly is that 'Driver SF' app on your phone? Is it like those digital trips in the first game where you just play Driver: San Francisco?

@ntm: Well Considering that the first Watch Dogs has MOUNTAINS just a few minutes north of the City and not, y'know, Rosemont I'd say it was SUPER ACCURATE. But this new one looks great.

Riding a moped

"It ain't me" starts playing

I'm really looking forward to Watch Dogs 2 just to see how lame they are gonna get with their story. With Ubisoft's knack for making good sequels, I think it'll be fun to play as well and taking place in SF, I think it'll be a neat way to live out the rage fantasy of murdering all those hipsters on unicycles and Bon Jovi meth heads like from the podcast.

I had a somewhat decent time with the first game but tapped out somewhere around 1/3 of the way through because all the characters were so bland if not outright annoying and the hacking angle seemed tacked on as a gimmick.

While there's a totally different tone to this game, I don't feel any differently about the footage I've seen. The characters seem terrible and the game seems like a somewhat lifeless open world game that happens to have "hacking" in it.

I'd be glad to be proven wrong, but this Quick Look didn't excite me much and the thumbnail for it is about all I need to be convinced this game isn't for me.

This is the first time I saw WD2 and said wow that actually looks fun. All the hacking tools look a lot better and sillier compared to what they did before. If it gets good reviews I might actually pick it up.

so this protagonist we got here, wiz kid prodigy and prominent member of a secret underground hacker collective that the cops presumably are none too friendly with, walks around with a hat announcing his affiliation. sure, that seems fine and like a thing a person would do, like me and my custom graphic tee that says "i have no car insurance"

Every time someone mentions Watch Dogs 2 on this site... EVERY TIME, I think of Sleeping Dogs 2. Square Enix please send help :(

THANK YOU! Literally every time I see this game I imagine it's Sleeping Dogs 2 and then I get sad all over again.

This game looks pretty good, though. Gonna wait for the reviews, of course.

Given Jeff & Dan's comments about how San Fran cops will ignore hobos walking around with carts full of stolen bike parts and shooting up meth publicly, this sounds accurate.

Call me insane but I think the tone of Watch Dogs 2 is even worse than the first one (which I actually enjoyed quite a bit - I want my terrible hacking near-future game to be rainy and somber and full of people losing sight of everything in order to get revenge for their lost loved ones). Very – as the kids would say – "try hard".

Can you punch memeface in his stupid face? Or at least murder him? Why else is he in the game? Considering Aiden Pearce, one can't trust Ubisoft to be aware of what their characters are appropriate for. So I'm a little bit worried that I won't see catharsis.

Ah yes, won't you buy this fucking CRT TV off me, Mr. Pawn Shop Man?

It's only morons like me who still keep CRT TVs around for gaming.

You can barely even give them away.

Hacking cars to make them boost isn't that far off. I mean, you can certainly chip tune cars and chips are computers, so you should be able to hack them, right?

Hopefully as they say the game does make fun of itself saints row style but man there are waay to many people who take this stuff seriously.

Still has one button insta hacking but at least it seems like the type of stuff you are triggering is more robust. It doesn't seem like your hacking cameras anymore since you just use the drones to look around.

I pre-ordered this during Amazon's E3 sales for a 40% discount and I think I'll probably keep that preorder after seeing this.

@humanity: There are parts of the story that you do not choose in the first game that made Aiden a hypocrite. Like when he corners a drug dealer and threatens to harm his family, his children, unless he tells Aiden what he wants to know. Aiden is a man who lost his niece under similar circumstances. That was just one instance of him acting completely foolish and it's pretty early on. There's also the fact that you are frequently tasked with killing or beating the crap out of someone before they've committed a crime based on a machine predicting that they're about to.

Don't get me wrong though, I like Watch Dogs. I spent much time defending it as well. I really enjoyed the gameplay, I loved how the hacking mechanics blended with stealth gameplay. It certainly did it in a way no other stealth game has done it before or since. I also loved how much you could know about every single random NPC. Seeing someone's name, hobby, deep dark secret, job, income level, criminal record, listening to their phone conversations and reading their text messages. Every person in that game has infinitely more backstory than people in GTA or pretty much any open world action game.

The story is just where I think the whole game falls apart. It had such an interesting premise, and I wanted it to delve more into ctos. How it works, what it does, the politics that created it as well as the politics that it would spawn, and the history of its development. I thought the Minority Report-esque theme would have been great to explore but they hardly explore that stuff at all. It's basically just "this is a thing." The game doesn't even have anything to say about the morality of such a system. I would have loved to hear good arguments for and against it, but the game never really has anything to say about the matter. They come close sometimes. Like privacy invasions where you see people doing weird or bad things. But that's all there is. Nothing comes of it. It would have been nice if they showed for instance a child being abused at home, and the police busting in to stop it. Then contrasting that with instances of government overreach when the system notices someone doing something innocuous and un-harmful like smoking weed in their private residence and the police busting in to stop it. There's so much material there, conversations to spark and create discussion about. But instead of focusing on that interesting stuff the whole campaign is about revenge and kidnapping and meeting ransom demands. It was all very boring and I constantly found myself re-writing the dialogue in my head, wanting it to be better than it was.

I'm going to make a bold guess and say that the guy in the mask and tattoos is Aidan Peirce's nephew from the first game.

I actually liked Watch Dogs and beat it twice - once on the PC and then the PS4. It didn't live up to the huge hype, but it was still a decent sandbox game with an interesting story IMO. So if Dan is right and this game is better, I look forward to playing it.
