Ahhh I feel sorry for jeff, I know that feeling and it sucks. I also learned never to use shitty screwdrivers when building PCs as it makes things needlessly difficult. Keep us updated if you get it running

jeff. Props to Jason for helping out as much as he could.

No it's starts as a "lets sorta teach Dan how building a PC works" type of thing and turns into a "oh this is a little more complicated than when I last built a PC." situation.

Jeff's PC:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7

CPU: Intel 6700k

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 16gb DDR4(Don't know the frequency)

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V.2

PSU: EVGA Supernova 850GS

SSD: Western Digital WD Blue 1TB

Case:Fractal Design Define R5 Black

GPU: GTX 1080 Founders Edition

M.2 SSD : 1TB M.2 Intel 540

Man, I mentioned this in the chat, but seeing it all laid out, he really overspent on that PSU. And especially after all of the trouble he had setting it up, that watercooler was a bit over the top, too.

I knew as soon as they started trying to blaze their way through the cooler installation without taking the time to read the manual front to back that we were in real trouble. That is the finickiest part of putting together a PC if you've got a complicated multi-socket cooler, and depending on how terrible the stock cooler's mounting hardware is (looking at you socket 775) even then it's no picnic.

It's still a SATA SSD. It won't be any faster than a regular 2.5" SATA SSD. He should have gone for an NVMe drive like the Samsung 950 Pro or the upcoming 960 Pro or 960 EVO.

i bet chat for this show was wonderful

Here's the chat experience in a nutshell (there's a lot of topics and trends established over those 4 hours):

  • "Boom Boom Boom Boom"
  • :plur
  • <frantically repeating what Will Smith said about how to assemble the liquid cooling system>
  • Dan is good at dancing / Dan is not good at dancing
  • "Who is that?" "That's CBSi Engineer Regina"
  • "What are they doing?"
  • "Oh my god this is still going on?"
  • <how to install every piece of hardware, with different and often times opposing opinions>
  • "Is this the longest UPF?" [Turns out, it is]
  • "This is the best UPF"

@clagnaught: Will Smith yelling HOSES DOWN, the 35+ minutes that a 16 second sample of BOOM BOOM MONEY played, the many times that small screws got lost/caught in the case.

@subwayd: It's kind of. It's more "let's open all the boxes and waffle about what to do."

I don't mind it so much, but it does give people a really bad impression who haven't built PCs. I had a buddy that I had watch a 30 minute tech report video. He followed it. Built his own system start to finish in less than an hour. He didn't even know what a harddrive looked like before. It's not really that hard.

Admittedly, a watercooler makes it a bit tougher. Not recommended for first time builders.

I am guessing this is the first time Jeff build a pc from scratch. Because it mirrors my own experience when I did it the first time. it took me about 2-3 hours and even had it not power up the first time. But I learned a lot of important lessons from that and it would never takes me that long again. Also I hope this video doesn't scare off people from trying to building their own pc. There a lot of good guides on youtube.

I've always found standing at a table is better for building. Understand that you had to work with your studio surroundings. Just a tip for the future.

I built my last PC in 2015. And prior to that the last build was 8-10 years before. I installed mother board and CPU and then went to do CPU cooler and found out they have a backing plate now so I had to pull everything out lol. Live and learn.

He could probably save some money not getting the founders edition, but good ass setup otherwise.

"You can't screw the motherboard to where it attaches outside of the case"

On some cases you can, I had a high tower case where the motherboard mounting was a sled that could be pulled out the back (where the ports are). Not possible to pull it out fully once all the case and HDD wires are plugged in but enough to pull it away from the HDD casings and get better access to the mobo parts.

I love how Jason just wanders over after everybody leaves and stuff gets done.

Underrated moment: "Dan, do not lose this screw." Dan proceeds to stare at the screw for three straight minutes.

Indeed. If everyone openly acknowledged what they were actually ignorant about instead of pretending they know everything and were always open to learning what they don't know, we'd have a much more pleasant society. Dan might be ignorant on many things, but his willingness to genuinely learn puts him above most people I'd like to hang around with.
