Why not avoid this whole thing and just have a genre called Interactive Experiences or something.

Great video! I have definitely fallen into the "It should have been something other than a game!" camp at times but your point about exposure and accessibility swayed me. I don't personally love those types of games, but they're still games, and there are obviously a lot of gamers who do love them.

Recently playing through 12 Minutes recently put things into perspective with the twitch clip of Voidburger saying the Firewatch ending "wasn't game-ruiningly, cataclysmically bad." She's right, 12 Minutes is that example, not Firewatch

Oooh boy, I'm kinda ashamed to admit that I didn't "get" the end of "The Beginner's Guide" until now (though I still loved the whole thing at the time, I was just very confused at that bit).

I can't believe I was able to dodge the ending of Firewatch for 5 and a half years, until Voidburger comes around and spoils the whole thing for me

I loved the way the story wraps up in Firewatch. I love the government conspiracy fake-out. I think I would have really disliked or that the game wouldn't have stuck with me if it had a more expected ending.

Dig your Hot Take, Jess. I think it isn't a game, but that's okay, and I still like it. But the ending was a bummer. I like lots of things that aren't video games. Some stuff on steam are less like games and more like other things. There's many 'games' that are actually more like toys. Townscaper for one, and it's lovely! And visual novels are basically illustrated choose your own adventure ebooks. If a choose your own adventure book is a game, what about just a regular book? Because there are visual novels without any choices that are 100% linear. They are certainly aren't games, are they? And I've read a couple that were good. My thesis is okay that walking sims aren't games, but that's okay, not every story needs gameplay.

This made me reconsider the ending to this. I just took it as an ending that wasn't satisfying, and finding peace with that. This is a true Hot Take.

I never even considered people would be displeased with the ending of Firewatch. Not talking about everyone of course, but a lot of MFers must have been showing that they don't consume any media other than videogames. That specific feeling it was leaving you with is a classic film ending.
