Lockdown 2020: We Can't Stop Jeff From Playing More PSO2

We've tried to get him to listen to reason but he keeps muttering about "scape dolls" and "running the forest five more times to finish these client orders."

It's a lockdown baby! We're under orders to work from home so here we go!

In This Episode:

Phantasy Star Online 2

Episode Notes:

This stream broke at some point, so I stitched together the two parts into one. You'll probably notice the stitch, but I don't think I did anything of value in the part that was lost, so hey! Join the Giant Bomb alliance today, Mac!

I've been playing PSO2 every day, and every once in a while I'll see that Jeff has upgraded the clan level, and I'm like "Oh hey, Jeff is still going!"

got through chapters 1,2,3 and half of 4 of PSO2 on the japanese version

it really sucks cos the combat can be really fun and engaging with the melee classes. but constant inventory management and archaic real-money systems make it so hard to enjoy. for those that can see past these issues it can be a wonderful timesink

This PSO resurgence has mostly reminded me of my feelings of negativity towards the genre these days.

PSO was basically just 3D console Diablo. So what do we have all these years later? The same damn games with better visuals. Path of Exile, Diablo 4, all those Warhammer games, Van Hellsing, etc. They're just tweaked Diablo 2.

Sega was trying to innovate on the genre back on the Dreamcast and I'd give PSO2 a pass for the same reason. There seems like so much potential you could tap into here but every one making these games seems terrified to deviate from the basic Diablo model.

It's like how 90% of Moba's are still designed to look and function like Warcraft 3 mods, not because gameplay demands it but because the audience is used to it. Can't dare risk upsetting the audience.

Borderlands was exciting for being a first person Diablo with guns. Big hit right? Yet the take away from the industry was instead to make more Borderlands, more FPS's with loot, or to stick loot in other games with guns, instead of "Borderlands tried something new and exciting on top of a proven concept and reaped the benefits". Which is sad.

I look forward to PSO2 coming to a platform I own later this year. A port of an eight year old sequel to a Dreamcast game is still one of the freshest looking experiences the genre seems to have on offer in 2020.

(Hey, Diablo 3 and whatever else are still fun. Game design ain't broke because it's been done before. But evolve or die. You don't succeed by carbon copying the market leader)

Jesus Christ, they have a tutorial tip to tell you about the concept of not standing in a glowing circle. What a game!

Jeff, I put this on you. I thought I wouldn't like it and now I'm neck deep in PSO2. I'm having a whole lot of fun.

@jeff On the pause menu 'tab' that shows client orders, the bottom option will show you orders you can complete on your currently active quest. Also, mags don't recharge energy with 'food devices', those just increase stats. Try feeding it some weapons or furniture. Client orders that can be turned in show up as a green circle on the minimap or on the edge of it, it's easier to find them since the draw distance is so short.
