We Talk Over the E3 2018 EA Press Conference

After the great year in gaming that was 2017, I’d figured this year would be a reload year.

This was a snoozefest, but that sea of solitude or whatever it's called looks interesting. Might check out Unravel 2 too, to see if it's any good.

It makes sense for games to incorporate a battle royale mode. It's the first thing I said when I played PUBG. I wish battlefield folks would have made this. Solid shooting, proper net code, destructible buildings.

I skipped my graduation to watch this press conference.

E3 always reminds me why I never watch this kind of trailer/pre-release/announcement content the rest of the year. I wouldn't know what to do with this if the crew hadn't talked over it.

I love how they go from making a big deal of no lootboxes in Battlefield V directly into FIFA with its horrible, predatory Ultimate Team stuff. Kiiiiiinda feels like they're missing the point there.

I fell asleep halfway through this was a complete shit show of a conference. Anthem looks exactly like I imagined it. And that fucking Owen is obnoxious. Nothing here is gonna blow anyone's socks off. Praying Ubisoft has a good conference.

Nice to see Vinny was able to find the darker table covers he was after before they got started.

What the hell happened with Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Like, those two games were fantastic, and seem way better with time (ME especially), how did they ever manage that level of quality? Not to take anything away from these games, but ... fuck. I'm guessing the real answer is that it's a different team, but this is just a bummer.

Battlefield V seems great, only game I was impressed by, really.

I was out during this and got the press email "EA Announces Command & Conquer: Ri" and the rest was cut off, and I was momentarily very excited. I then opened it and saw "Coming to iOS and Android" :/

Uhm, did you completely miss Mass Effect Andromeda last year? That game was everything but quality or fantastic.

Such a wack press conference. I was left totally unmoved.

My favourite thing about watching these is when one of the crew says something during a trailer and I assume it’s part of it. This time it was Jeff saying ‘Football’ in the middle of the Madden trailer which would have made it 300% better

No Battlefield V gameplay? That game comes out in 4 months.

Sea of Solitude and Unravel 2 was by far the highlights of EA. Well, Command and Conquer Rivals is a highlight just for Dan's mixed feelings for it.

Other than that EA's presentation was eh, but GB's commentary was great! Feels good to be back in E3 season!

Dude, exactly. I was actually getting annoyed by them talking over the ONLY THINGS I MIGHT HAVE WANTED TO HEAR. Kinda GB's thing, but they really need to work on timing.

Ben's "the final boss is taxes" in response to Anthem's "Freelancer" job title hit painfully home.

Sounds like they completely misunderstood the "social spaces" in Anthem. It's the opposite of what they were saying it is. The "tower" or hub or whatever has no players and is for story, while the mission spaces are where all the players are.

SOS was the clear highlight for me, looks pretty cool. Also Jedi Fallen Order sounds like it could be a return to the Jedi Outcast/Academy style Star Wars game. The name alone has me super excited. Mostly underwhelming conference though.

Not the best EA conference ever, but far from the worst. Anthem looks fun even if it isn't an RPG. I'm a little worried about the lack of story info and seeming ability to just fly by most enemies instead of fighting them, though. I'll continue to hope in vain for another Dead Space and Burnout someday.

I thought the games they showed looked interesting. I'm happy with it. Here's hoping things turn out as they seem.

Biggest Hype: SOS. I want to believe that game can be both good and meaningful.

Biggest disappointment: No mention of Lil Yachty being the captain of their fake world cup. I know it isn't #Weed3 level dumb, but still...

Anthem looks great, can't wait for it.

I'm pretty concerned about Anthem now. It's months away, and that's what they showed? Yikes! What about a hook, what about setting or key compelling characters? Destiny at least had the intrigue surrounding the Traveler, and some great visual design.

BioWare's last game was Mass Effect: Andromeda, so I'm a tad bit worried if they can pull this off.

I'm with Vinny and Brad, it's a bit unnerving that they're showing so little of Anthem when it's really not that far away. It'll probably turn out fine I guess, but it just seems weird going into E3 without much at all to say about it.

As always, EA with the most boring conference. Glad we're past that and on to the main courses!

I mean that is exactly what you sign up for when you watch the streams. Curious what all those things were tough, the only thing i found where they talked over something was the whole battle royale thingie for BF5 which they hilariously themselves were confused by.

At the end of the game in Anthem you take off your helmet and it's revealed that you've been Yarny the whole time.

I played one match of that Command & Conquer game, and the opponent I played against pulled his troops off the point and stopped the gauge on his missile, which was very close to launching.

I have no idea why he did that. I had assumed it was some kind of weird strat, but no, just pulled his dudes right off onto the ground, did not correct himself so it can't have been a mis-tap, and practically handed me the game. Thanks, EA!

@pancakepatriarchate: Especially considering it's so unlike any other BioWare game (no AI squadmates, no romances, online only) you'd think they'd want to be going real deep on Anthem, or at least have a better pitch. Instead they show a bunch of pretty generic looking combat stuff and some generic story bits about saving the world with barely any insight into the story stuff or how its different than Destiny.

As somebody who expects character and story heavy single player RPGs out of BioWare, Anthem just looks like its not at all for me, which is too bad since BioWare has made some of my favorite games in the past.

@klyith: Eh, it’s the first main conference and it set about as dull a tone as ever. Here’s to me being wrong though!

This was a standard EA conference. That is to say it was safe, boring, and a complete waste of my time to watch. Can't say I'm surprised. Happy that we're past the annual snoozer and we can see what the other companies are up to, although I do wish that Microsoft had gone Saturday night so that the entire day wasn't a wet fart.

EA's conferences are always shit though, so I wouldn't try to draw conclusions from it.

This was a trainwreck. At least the staff had some fun with it.
