Really wish Abby could have been part of the commentary. Her view on things is unique and interesting. Guess someone's gotta be behind the camera though! Good work Jan, Abby, and Jason!

Xbox and their press conferences, under Phil Spencer, have been pretty solid for several years now. This seemed pretty on par with at least the last 2 or 3 shows.

That was a great conference. A lot of the games look great. I hope things really work out for all of them. It's good to see a healthy interest in quality games for better competition. If only I had the time to play them all. It's never been a better time to play video games!

for me personally none of the games they showed captured my attention at all. i enjoy bioware's games and was very interested in seeing what Anthem was. given that last year they already revealed that game as being a game where you fly around jungles and shoot monsters, i was curious to see what additional info they'd reveal about that game. all they had to show this year was .. ?? more looped footage of the playable character flying around a jungle shooting monsters.

watch this footage from last year and tell me they didn't show the exact same details this year? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQhbHwkMSA4

the conference was a waste of time and in no shape or form really needed to be its own standalone conference. (imo !!! of course. i'm no professional, just a dude on website comments section!!!)

No I mean MS had a fantastic conference, you're in the MS e3 thread and not EA.

I know no one cares but I really dislike the "guess what game this is by yelling out random names then looking smug and saying 'yes' if he gets it right" that Dan does. Sometimes you can just be quiet and let the quiet moments in the trailers breathe.

@dystopiax: They all do this to some extent. I tend to watch the press conferences without commentary live, then come back and watch the commented ones later, if I feel like it. It's called "We Talk Over X" for a reason, I guess.

I actually thought the Microsoft press conference was pretty middling.

Don't get me wrong, there were a lot of exciting new games shown. But, how many of those games can people play on PS4? A significant amount. I think Microsoft's only big exclusive "get" was We Happy Few.

Like it or not(and I don't like it), exclusivity matters. People will generally buy the console with more games because more high quality games equals more value added.

I look forward to 2019/2020 when Microsoft's smart(but also belated) decision to acquire more studios pays off.

@bathala: for real even Bethesda had Garfield, it'll take new time for their 5 acquisitions to bear fruit. They're trying to catch up to 1st party portfolio on the level of even Nintendo, let alone Sony. I'm not hating either I want MS to keep pushing, I love that they've got a great hardware platform and love the huge investments they've made into legacy support. Just the final piece of their puzzle is big games that are only on X.

Gotta finish Witcher 2 so I can finish Witcher 3 before I play the completely unrelated follow-up lol.

Yeah I made that comment after the Halo one where it was primarily Dan, but then everyone starting doing it a little. I like a lot of the other commentary, I just feel like the guessing bit becomes more of an unspoken competition of games knowledge or something than anything actually entertaining or insightful. I'm still watching it because I like their takes on a lot of what's happening, but I could really do without that part.

Maybe I'm feeling my 40s coming, but nothing this year is getting me hyped. The way games are trending anyway makes me happy I still have older games to play.

Alright, Sekiro and Cyberpunk look cool as shit.

Exactly the wrong attitude. E3 conferences are not investor calls. They are meant to get people excited to be playing games, especially on your platform. Exclusives are great for that, but E3 is about celebrating all of gaming. You feature your partners because those are gonna be awesome games that you can play on your Xbox (and have it run and look better, but whatever). Should Sony excise COD and Destiny from their stage? Or are they only worth talking about because of asshole DLC practices? Games should be celebrated for being fun, not for being artificially held back. I am excited to play Fallout on my xbox. I am excited to play Nier on my xbox. I am excited to play Forza Horizon on my xbox. I am excited to play Gears Tactics on my pc (if it can run) (also, why is this not on xbox). You see? That is the point of an E3 press conference.

I can't believe that Boogie and Angry Joe on the YouTube stage crapped all over the conference for 15 minutes and didn't even freaking talk about the games!! WTF... I'm not annoyed at this trend at all... pfft.. (Also, We Happy Few shouldn't be exclusive. Even if MS could make it that way, that would be the stupidest thing possible)

Yes and I don't think Microsoft did a good job of making it about their platform. They showed a lot of good multi-platform games that I'm excited to play. But, they absolutely shouldn't have made the majority of the conference about other companies games, no matter how close the partnership. So yes, they got me excited about the coming year in gaming. But, they didn't get me excited about the Xbox in particular. Which, imo, means they failed because the point is to get people who aren't part of the Xbox ecosystem excited about where Xbox is going.

The press conferences exist to sell people(consumers or investors) on the future of your company. That is the way Sony/Microsoft/Ubisoft are approaching it. The celebration of gaming thing is a purely a fan perspective. The press conferences originated as very business oriented thing. If you go back 5-6 years ago Microsoft/Sony would put charts and graphs with sales figures in their press conferences.

Also, just to clarify, I don't think exclusivity is a good thing(in an ideal world you could play God of War on your xbox). But it is a real thing and its not something we cannot ignore.

All that said, I think Microsoft is on the right track. All the pro-consumer moves they've made with backwards compatibility and game pass are gonna pay off huge for them when their new first party studios start putting out games.

Edit: grammar

I was at the show (and like Jeffy B almost didn't get in), and the biggest cheers came at the opening Chief helmet and near closing when Cyberpunk entered the username "RED". Unfortunately neither had gameplay.

FH4 and Ori will tide me over in the meantime. Both looked amazing.

@qrowdyy: Boy, that was a long treatise I just wrote below. If you don't read it, that's fine lol. TLDR: Xbox press conference is for the fans, not the outsiders who have already made up their mind. They did a great job showing that Xbox is a fantastic place to play games - even the best place to play for many people, and still a damn fine option for everyone else. Fans came away happy. Mission accomplished.

Ah, I understand why you say that, but I think you give too much credence to the console war. The point of E3 is NOT to "get people who aren't part of the Xbox ecosystem excited". This late into the generation, you're not trying to convert players. The people who haven't bought in are more price conscious, maybe tied to PlayStation or Nintendo or PC. Maybe a few will be swayed by power or features or ease of entry. There are always some still-interested hold outs, especially on a gaming dedicated site like GB. But they are not the targets of E3.

The Xbox press conference at E3 is for Xbox fans. That's it. It is for people who are invested in the ecosystem and are worried that Xbox won't be there and won't have anything. They worry that publishers may stop supporting the platform and they'll miss out on games, or even that Xbox will abandon the industry. This E3 killed those fears. 1st party is alive and working hard. 3rd party is not just interested, but showing up in a BIG way for Xbox. Xbox proved its commitment to the platform, the services, the software, and the hardware.

People seem to think that Xbox would only have a good E3 if they had a ton of exclusives. Yea? Microsoft revealed more new exclusives than Sony. Not counting PSVR, that's also true for the entire weekend (unless Nintendo announces a PS4 exclusive). Microsoft featured more 1st party exclusive games than Sony on stage. In fact, Microsoft featured more exclusive games in general (and more multiplat and more games in general and..). Yet, I hear people say that MS had no exclusives, and claim that Sony had more "quality" or something. Listen, exclusives do not make a conference. Sony can "win" E3 with fewer exclusives because people buy into their ecosystem. You can't really fight that - it's a perception and preconception thing. So you don't do that.

Instead, you work on delivering a fantastic experience for the people who stand by your side. This is what initially won Sony this gen. They had a marginally better product, but they capitalized on mindshare. Xbox is figuring it out. Xbox and PS and Nintendo are all doing great and making fans happy. Happy fans means a vibrant community, which sustains strong business. I'm all for that.
