Love me a big chocobo.

Honestly, I wish I had time for FFXIV. I got into it around the launch of ARR and played right through to level 50 but didn't get especially into the endgame. I still play it every so often, but it's just a game I dip into to chill out and do some casual grinding now and again. The people I used to play with dropped off and I'm not willing enough to join randoms or make a commitment to sticking with a brand new group of people to go through the stuff that'd get me into the newer content. I do love the world though, it's still one of the most gorgeous games out there for my money.

I've forced myself not to get into FFXIV because I just don't have the time and have plenty of other non-subscription games to play, but I'd be into vicariously experiencing it via Jan!

@y2ken: I play through FFXIV exclusively through their matchmaking system. 99% of the time you get matched with people who know what they're doing and they're more than willing to help if you let them know it's your first time through a dungeon or boss trial. Only problem is that matchmaking can take a while if you are a DPS class. Tanks and Healers get matched almost instantly because they are roles that are in high demand. DPS always get long queue times.

Man starting FF 14 now is terrible. You used to be able to take abilities from other classes you leveled up, but you can't anymore so the early experience is bone crushingly boring.

Honestly I think the whole experience is bone crushingly boring now post shadowbringers' changes, but in the early game I'm sure Jan's played mobile tap games that are more engaging and require more thought. The world is super charming and the music is wonderful, but they've made the game shockingly boring with these past two expansions and it's really tough to start out now.

At first I was upset that Jeff doesn't remember his obsession with Stark Trek Online and Star Wars: The Old Republic. But then I was upset at myself for remembering that.

This kind of makes me want to rewatch those Matrix Online videos.

Man, I love Final Fantasy, but I played all the way through the base content of 14 and couldn't have been more uninterested in playing more. Lot of people talking about how amazing it is now, but I can't imagine it has changed THAT much right?

FFXIV mounts look good. Been wanting to check it out, but haven't played an MMO since I spent something like 16 hours camping a MOB (is that correct?) in FFXI, sleeping in 2 hour spurts while a friend filled in, barely beating said MOB, getting the item I was there for, then never playing ever again. I don't want to play games like that anymore (nor do I have the time. I was unemployed during my FFXI days). But am still frustratingly drawn to FFXIV...

That depends, what did you dislike about it? The voice acting, presentation, and story of the base content is painfully generic and I groan anytime my daily roulette puts me in a 2.0 dungeon. But all the expansion content has been amazing thus far. I've been engrossed in the game's story and lore since Heavensward.

However if you disliked how most quests involve going back and forth talking to people or killing however many mobs or how grindy it is, that's not really gonna change your opinion much. It's still gonna be an MMO at the end of the day. I won't sugar coat it, a lot of quests still require going from point A to point B just to talk to people, but I would say the difference is the expansions do a great job of framing those quests within a compelling story so that I am eager to see what happens after each main story quest.

@dryker: FFXIV is a very different kind of MMO than FFXI. Camping on mobs like that really isn't a thing in FFXIV, outside of completely optional side stuff. (Which really only exists to give the hardcore players something else to do.)

FFXI was my first MMO and it kinda turned me off of MMOs for years, but ironically FFXIV is the one I've stuck with (off and on) by far the longest.

@dryker:

FFXIV is very casual friendly. It has a simple UI and it holds your hand through pretty much everything in the early content. MMO vets might hate that, but I appreciated it when I first got into FFXIV. Whereas most MMOs toss you into the world and expect you to sort through the countless vendors and currency types without any guidance, FFXIV does a good job of walking you through every aspect of the game.

I find the quest marker system in FFXIV to be extremely helpful. Main Story Quests (MSQ's) have distinctly different symbols than generic side quests. The UI in the top left of the screen also will always direct you to the next Main Story Quest so you will never get lost or forget what you're supposed to do to actually progress in the game.

The combat system is pretty simple compared to most MMOs and the gear progression is pretty much all linear. Min/Maxing isn't really a thing because there is no build variance among individual jobs. Tank gear always has strength and vitality stats as their primary stats. You're not sifting through 3-4 different sets of level 50 gear to compare and contrast stats and decide which is "optimal."

Experienced MMO players who want more depth from their MMO's might hate FFXIV, but I like that it's a solo-friendly and relaxed casual MMO.

@grondoth: At the same time, basically having MANDATORY alternate job leveling to be even close to optimal on some Jobs was a huge pain in my ass. Getting Dragoon to 41 for Blood for Blood just so I can eek out a bit more damage on my Machinist was the worst thing. And if you didn't have Blood for Blood, good luck ever finding a static. Role Actions fill the same...role and do so much better. Sure you may sacrifice some ability variation up front, but it's better in the long run.

Final fantasy 14 is a good game

Now, if you are interested in playing the game to get to the second expansion after heavensward you will have MANDATORY main quest story to complete and drum roll please, just to step into the first expansion ... were talking 150 to 200 hours of MAIN STORY CONTENT and 100 quests to go from level 50 to level 51.

I've played more MMOs than half the planet and as much as I love final fantasy 14 the story and cutscenes are awful and a total drag to sit through.

The best MMO is still EverQuest and that too has had a resurgence with the classic progression server. I just can't these days and even F2F 14 is brutally frustrating with bad groups and is chock full of elitists at the end game.

I have only won one game of Apex myself and watching Jeff’s final game was way more satisfying.

Looking back on these first quests for FFXIV made me go "Ergh, right... We had to go through that garbage."

It's really too bad they haven't done much to create a better experience for getting through the first 50 levels or so. As others have mentioned you just need to stick with it. You'll get to the good stuff soon enough.

Hope to see more FFXIV content! Like a "Jan and Rorie - Warriors of Light" show maybe. :D

Honestly while FFXIV plays really well on a controller, I would probably recommend getting familiar with the game on M+K first, it's just a lot easier to get to know the game with more precise controls and being about to click around on menu systems.

@boosh: the expansions for FFXIV are where it’s at, the base game is pretty lackluster in comparison. If you still have it I highly recommend giving the first expansion Heavensward a shot, the story is really pretty fantastic!

More FFXIV content is fantastic, long time player myself, but I hope if they end up doing regular stuff they record it in advance so they don't get a train of people following them everywhere all the time.

I am glad Jan is having fun with XIV, I had fun too, and was wrapped up in the fantasy elements and the particle effects, even the less than mature combinations of emotes *several* people would choreograph to simulate certain acts in the middle of towns.

but...whew, dude. I am so glad that FFXIV has aged exactly the same way I imagined in my head, now that I see it many many years later. I just got back into warframe, and if I hadn't, maybe I would be looking at this as a maybe, but the class I played is what Jan played, all the stuff he saw, I saw, all the gameplay and all the vanilla story is still the same, nothing new, no big overhaul. And it has been a long time since I enjoyed, then soured, then forgave FFXIV for what it was and made my exit from a final fantasy without a strong voice or sensible story (I hit 30 and quit quickly after, so I don't know about story of the expansions, but honestly, I don't think the gameplay could carry the weight of $15 a month.
