Obviously Dan is hating it, but these boss fights look really fun to me. I've always preferred "memorize it's patterns, learn it's weaknesses, and wait for your chance to get some hits in" to "shoot it until it dies". A version of the Viper fight where you can't go through the wires at all actually looked way more fun to me than the real version they eventually realized. With as much trouble as he's having, I'm very surprised Dan ever beat Rex in MGS1. It's just as if not more obtuse and difficult.

Also, in reference to the complaints about not being able to skip cutscenes, that's most games more than 10 years old so I'm pretty surprised they were dunking on it so much as some sort of cardinal sin.

@genericbrotagonist: They've never played Kingdom Hearts, so they don't know the pain of the cutscene before the Riku fight.

Nothing like a nice two and half minute cutscene before the hardest fight in the game to that point.

Also I loaded up my Ghost Babel save from the first time I played it a couple of years ago. 3 hours 6 minutes, 8 rations used, spotted and killed enemies less than 20 times each. Codename: Tarantura (Good proof reading, developers)

We already know Dan killed over a hundred people a couple of episodes ago. His result screen should be interesting.

So it turns out Vince McMahon and Hideo Kojima have the same birthday (today). Though they were both born long before Dan, I can't help but feel that he's somehow responsible for this coincidence.

I want a soundboard of Alex encouraging Dan from the last few eps that I can use next time I'm playing a frustrating game.

I don't know what the hesitation is with using save states to save time skipping cut scenes. Either way, good job everyone getting us this far!

This game is... well, all I'm saying is that I don't see why it's not part of the core Metal Gear series.

You can do it! Just imagine, you might find out Chris' fate, what Ghost Babel is, Gindra's involvement with Outer Heaven, and who Anonymous is.

I think some of the aggravation is also based on expectations. Dan has mentioned that howlongtobeat suggested the game was pretty short (I just checked, the site inexplicably claims that the main story only takes 3.5 hours to beat). It seems like Dan went into it expecting this game to take them maybe 2-4 episodes to finish, but here we are at episode 6, they've put in waaaaay more than 3.5 hours, and there's going to be an episode 7 where they finally finish it. So I think that's part of why Dan hates it; maybe he wants this game to be done with because there is other video content that is being held up by this feature.

But yeah, as for the game itself, it's fine, and is pretty typical of game design for portables in that era. It's not as bad as they make it out to be, I think they're just impatient to finish it because they expected it to be like 3-4 episodes long like all the previous MSX Metal Gears have been.

@bisonhero: This exactly. I just finished a replay and got a final time of 2:20 on the final screen, but that doesn't count deaths and story, only the sum of all levels. A proper estimate for a first time through the story is 8-10 hours.

I'm the guy who mailed the game to Dan, and I played the hell out of it 17 years ago. Back then, I only crawled under the wires and didn't find this boss fight to be all that difficult. I only found out you can run through them a few weeks ago, when I re-played the game to give tips on the live stream.

The TOP SECRET documents I included was only intended to highlight the next objective ("Get the Key Card on this floor, then head to the elevator"), and mention special items they might miss (Mine Detector, Body Armor).

I gave a very detailed walkthrough of the box conveyor maze because I knew it was tedious, but didn't foresee how much they'd want to cling to a strict walkthrough for the rest of the series, which became their downfall in the previous episode.

@bisonhero: HLTB is always a rough estimate for me and not a solid expectation. I'm pretty methodical so it takes longer sometimes.

Looks like Dan didn't see the fine print. 3.5 hours is "rushed", so it's like "if you already know what you're doing" and not "playing for the first time, don't have a clue, and die a lot".

The boss battles aren't that bad. Checkpointing is, but I don't think many games of the era were any better at it.

And then in MGS2, when the GW AI is freaking out, one of the things the colonel calls you with is the mission briefing from Ghost Babel. The implication seems to be that Ghost Babel is entirely a VR simulation that Raiden is going through, but there are some pretty big contraditions. Raiden doesn't seem to know what Outer Heaven is in MGS2, he has to have Campbell explain it to him. Since Galuade doesn't exist in the other games, and this "No. 4" characters talks about it as though it was real. Maybe throwing in the line about "Jack" was just a teaser for MGS2, like the RAY model in the original VR Missions, or maybe it's a clue that this is all VR. Considering what MGS2 was about, I wouldn't doubt it.

@hildatilde:The most likely option is that the Jack thing was a sequel hook for Ghost Babel 2 which never came out, there is a variety of other similarly unresolved plot threads that were clearly written with a follow-up in mind.

And I don't think the implication was ever that the entire game was a VR simulation, just the post-game special missions which were modeled after the real events of this game (as you quoted, combat ability exceeding "that of Solid Snake at the time of Galuade's fall" implying that was something that did actually happen).

Overall I'd say it's pretty clear this game's in its own separate continuity from the main series and that the MGS2 mention was just a small easter egg.
