Having essentially a RFID tag in your hand is just kinda dumb. There's no reason for it unless it's somehow re-programmable for multiple uses.

Feeling magnetic fields would probably get real annoying because magnetic fields are almost everywhere in a modern city.

I'm an engineer, and I'm super skeptical about this as anyone else should be! Also most of the use cases for RFID could be done using image processing. With image processing you don't have to put silly shit in your body. lol

Zoe, you're a wonderful person and I watched the start of the video of you getting that implant and I had to stop because I too am super squeamish and I couldn't deal with it (it's one of those things where seeing it done to you is probably weirdly easier to watch than seeing it done to someone else). But thank you for being a willing and eager pioneer in our cybernetic future.

Oh, and thanks to Patrick for conducting this interview on the topic. I was definitely interested to hear Zoe talk more about this, so thank you for providing a forum for that.

Zoe doing this is a neat thing, that video where she was using it to give a code for Deus Ex was rad...but I don't really know why it merits an interview (and I'm assuming some sort of trancsript/article is coming, too), I guess I'll have to listen to find out?

@conmulligan: I know that feeling. The idea of having a part of me improved, or replaced with something better is SO COOL, but when I get down to the gory details, it skeeves me right out each time. I was reading an account of a guy who had an artificial heart while he was waiting for a transplant, and when he mentioned that it doesn't beat, just maintains a more-or-less constant flow, I felt my skin crawl and actually became EMOTIONALLY upset. It makes me really sad that my subconscious is basically AGAINST the possibility of evolving beyond the human body's natural restraints.

I have MAJOR doubts that Zoe Quinn or ANYONE is being BULLIED into interviewing about stuff.

I really loved reading Warren Spector's reaction to her tweet. This is nuts in a way I can get behind. I'd never do it myself, I've had nightmares about forcibly getting RFID chips injected into my hand. But still.

I remember a video of a guy who got a QR code tattooed onto his chest along with some other stuff and when you scanned the code it'd load up a youtube video of a beating heart which fit into the rest of the tattoo. He put a lot of stuff into his body for that one.

Calling her 'attention seeking' is an opinion, and nothing else. Apparently those are not allowed in this thread. Gotcha.

My only concern is about the safety of doing this sort of thing yourself, back-alley style, but I have no problem with the concept itself. Body mods, you know, do whatever you want, but don't give yourself an infection or a toxicity issue because you didn't properly research what you decided to to.

Also, unless you're talking about dangerously strong magnets (in which case, you run the risk of having the thing just rip through your skin), I feel like the line about "feeling magnetic fields" must be exaggerated at best. You're not going to be suddenly "in tune with the earth's magnetic field" or anything like that with a tiny magnet under your skin. But I haven't actually listened to the interview, so apologies if the deck makes it sound more sensationalized than it actually is.

Is Zoe going to be compatible with the Nintendo Figure Platform?
