In 2014, he went on an impossible mission, with his body rapidly aging and death draws near every hour. He was to take on the might of Liquid (his clone brother) and 5 PMCs just for the sake of welfare of the nation and the world, even knowing the fact that whatever the outcome is, he'z gonna be dead soon. I'd say Blinx is more of a hero.  I mean, he can rewind time.  Can Solid Snake do that?  No!  Blinx could totally beat him in a fight too.

Actually, if you really look at the story, Solid Snake is kind of an ass...

He's no hero, never was, never will be. He's just an old killer hired to do some wetwork.

Actually it would seem to me that snake has no real choice on what he does, last i checked he was on retirement and hiding away in a cabin in alaska when soldiers snuck into his house beat him down, then shoved him onto a submeraine where he was told he had to do this, and then he was shot out of a torpedo tube, he did it to close ends with his past, and cause of his own urge to fight...not cause he loved america.
