Sonic and the Black Knight Review

Sonic has never been the same since his glory days back on the Sega console., but in an attempt to keep the once mighty hero from obscurity SEGA has been more than happy to throw him into anything that will take him. So you have Sonic who is summon to Camelot by Merlina, and it is his task to defeat the once good now evil king Arthur. You will be going through a number of different locals spending most of your time sprinting and swinging your sword. Your sword is the only sword that could hope to defeat the mighty Excalibur, and it goes by the name of Caliburn.

The graphics actually look good in game while traversing the levels. The problem is the menus, they don't look as crisp as they should be. The blacksmith menu is not something to write home about. The cameos by several of the Sonic crew was a nice touch, and they look great as different knights of the round table.

The music is the same in every level, unless of  course you find an item that you can equip and then you get to listen to a more annoying song over and over again. The little quotes that you get through out levels can get really old and feel recycled by the end of the game. Also some of the quotes will have you rolling your eyes, hopefully not hard enough to knock them out of your head.

The controls are simple, but at the same time aren't easy. There is a lot of timing in this game, and I think this game could have benefited from the Wii Motion Plus. There will be times where you're going to have to anticipate making a move in order to be able to get through a level. You will be using the nunchuck paired with the Wii mote, and the buttons you're going to be using a lot are A and Z. You'll be to use B when you have enough in your spirit gauge, but you're only going to need that for one battle really, and the levels where you learn how to use the skills.

So as stated before you are the savior of the realm summoned to defeat the now evil King Arthur. Your going to have to get through his 3 knights that protect him, all played by recognizable Sonic characters. You'll also have to go through levels some which are just named "Go for the Goal: Reach the Goal". With the combination of the lack for originality in the titles of the level, the sometimes too loose controls for certain levels, the fact that you can beat the game in under 3 hours, and the feeling that this game was rushed, you're not going to find much in this game. Yes you collect treasures through the levels, but most of it you won't get to see in game, and those that you do really aren't going to help out that much. There is a sort of leveling up mechanic in the game, but believe me its not really going to hinder you from beating the game if you don't do it.

I was really hoping that this game was going to have a glimmer of the old Sonic, but with poor level design (some levels it really felt like you went in and then immediately within a minute were done), and the very short playing time required to beat it, I really feel that this is an eighth of a game. This game should have been greatly fleshed out with more enemies (which by the way you're not going to be really enjoying how they look because you're Sonic and you'll be running fast through the levels), more levels (that goes for diversity of quests and names), and more boss battles. I know this will ruin the game for most but there are 4ish Boss Battles. So all I can say is this Sonic game, just like many others falls short, and gets a 4.7 out 10.

From videogame icon to faltering, gimmicky, uninspired mess; Sonic has had it rough since the jump to 3D. He’s got his head in the gutter, disgraced, with few fans left - it doesn’t look good. The last iteration, Sonic: Unleashed, provided a glimse of hope in these dark days with its day sections offering everything Sonic should be; fast and exciting - an exhilarating thrill ride, to say the least. But when the sun went down the werehog cropped up and ruined everything with its clunky combat and...
