Overview
Sonic! Software Planning was founded on June 12, 1991, by Hiroyuki Takahashi with funding from Sega following the release of Climax Entertainment's Shining and the Darkness. The company's capital stock totaled 40 million yen, 85 percent of which belonged to Sega, 6.25 percent to Climax Entertainment, and 4 percent to Hiroyuki. The studio was named after the character Sonic the Hedgehog, whose first game, developed by Sonic Team, was to release later that month.
Sonic! Software Planning's first project was to assist Climax Entertainment with the development of Shining Force for the Mega Drive. Following Climax's departure from the Shining series, Sonic became its principal developer starting with Shining Force Gaiden. Sonic continued to be the principal developer of the series until the studio was merged into another of Sega's subsidiaries, Nextech, in 1998. Camelot Software Planning, an independent studio founded by Shugo Takahashi in 1994 to make games for the PlayStation, had previously assisted Sonic with Shining Wisdom and Shining the Holy Ark and would be the studio to finish the development of Shining Force III's three scenarios.
