Sonic Still doesn't get it (but this time it's okay.)
Sonic Unleashed is a Video game that makes you want to punch yourself repeatedly in the face for liking sonic in the first place. Then you're left wondering for yourself if that was actually a good or a bad thing.
Well here's the thing. It's a good game... kind of. It takes the thing that you like most about Sonic in the first place and mixes it with something that, by itself, isn't that bad. Yet when you add it to the Sonic Formula it's a little confusing.
On the plus side you don't play as anybody but sonic, But then sonic turns into a Hedgewolf (Wolfhog? WereHog?) and it turns into a weird Prince of Persia/God of War/Stretch Panic kind of game.
I would say that this makes Sonic Unleashed a mess of a game, but I'm not complaining. Becuase sometimes The Werehog stages are pretty cool, when you start to accept them for what they are. If you're the kind of gamer that's going to be a little bitch about every new sonic game that comes out, then this probably isn't for you.
I feel like I don't really need to talk about the Sonic stages because those by themselves are Brilliant and I absolutely loved playing them, albiet at the same time, once is enough. Most of the time the Sonic Stages Suffer from it's pacing. Everyone that's played Sonic games forever knows that it's really just a stage of "from A to B." with the odd detour or alternate path here and there. But with this game you find yourself worrying if you're going to die and then you loose track of a moment where you should have jumped at a cetain point or pressed the right button in time. I try to make sure I have a lot of lives on hand incase there's a lot of trial and error that's about to happen. Maybe my hand/eye co-ordination isn't what it used to be.
Another thing about this game that I absolutely enjoy is the Boss fights, Especially for the Sonic Stages, they're done in a way that just makes sense to me. It's what makes SONIC work, when you keep the motion going it keeps it interesting.
That all being said, I never want to play another game where you have to collect rediculously placed medallions just to progress through a game. When it was first introduced in Platformers, it was a bad idea, and guess what! It still is.
Although I think the Wii version doesn't do that to you.
If you're a sonic fan, or a masochist pick this game up. You'll hate yourself for playing it sometimes, but in the end you'll actually feel a little accomplished, especially when a level is a great thing to experience from begining to end.
