    Sony Corporation

    Company »

    Since its 1946 founding, Sony has risen from an innovative Japanese electronics company to one of the leading mass media conglomerates around. Like its movie studio and music biz sister-corps, the SCEI divisions (and the PlayStation family) have been huge successes for Sony and its brand recognition worldwide.

    How long can Sony lose money?

    Sony as bin losing money as a company at lease since 2008:

    2008 = 1 billion lost

    2009 = 439 million lost

    2010 = 3.17 billion lost

    2011 = 5.57 billion lost

    Even if its gaming division makes a profit, the overall company is not profitable. How long before it files for bankruptcy?

    I hope that everything works out for the best in the end, but the financial world is very unforgiving.

    They just hired Adam Boyes, he can bring in 30.6 billion alone.

    As a rule japanese big name companies don't go bankrupt - another zaibatsu just takes them over. That said isn't Sony unofficially part of Mitsui Group anyway - and that group is still huge itself so can eat a few under performing companies.

    They probably can't continue functioning in their current form and continue to lose money as they have. The gaming division will likely continue unchanged, for the most part, because it makes money. The Sony Ericson brand, home computer division, and television arms might not be as safe.

    A long time.
    The TV divison and strong yen is what's killing them, if worst comes to worst they can severely downsize that shit, they'll be fine.

    They overprice their electronics so much that they have nothing to worry about.

    I don't see them pulling a THQ anytime soon but they do have a lot of fat to cut. Maybe at some point they will find the right CEO, who will know what to do.

    This is why they are grooming Kaz to take over. As eccentric as he seems, he has headed the most successful part of Sony Corp for awhile now.

    It is a little crazy how this company that was responsible for a fair share of groundbreaking innovations in home media consumption is kind of struggling to make ends meet, and not showing any of that brilliance and innovation for which it became known for.

    These $600 hi-def "walkmans" that Sony recently put out are like what? Who thought this was a good idea? Who is even going to buy an mp3 player thats bigger than a Smartphone and has nothing to offer apart from music playback.

    Not to mention their TV department, which they've been progressively downsizing over the years and getting rid of more and more models, seems to be behind the competition in both looks and technology yet they still price them as if they're market leaders.

    Sony really needs some new blood to step in and shake things up because it's a great old company that is stagnating in todays rapidly evolving consumer electronic market.

    @donderpants: Why have you created an account to specifically bump old threads about Sony losing money?

    Likely because it is in the news again, no need to necro old threads though.
