No, it's still a good system that a lot of people own. Far more then the PS3 has.

Should Sony FINALLY discontinue the PS2?
I don't really see the point in continuing it.
But i guess if people continue to make games and they don't ever add in some kind of Backwards compatibility it makes sense for them to keep it on the market.

How was the Xbox a faliure? It took 2nd place.

What countries are these?
Ever wonder why they were so quick to kill it and move on to the 360? Maybe it's because they never made money on the system and their projections said that they never would. They undercut the price of the system so much that by the time the 360 was coming out, they were losing $40 on every Xbox sold. The system might have been a success in establishing Microsoft as a console presence and building brands like Halo, Fable, and Xbox Live, but unlike Sony or Nintendo, they continued to lose money on every single system produced until they killed it off for the 360's sake. If that does not make the system a failure, I don't know what does.." @iAmJohn said:

Definitely not. Especially now that they have taken out the backward compatibility with ps2 games on the ps3. The playstation 2 is one hell of a system, and i think sony will keep making them available for a long time.
I just don't get what the problem is. The Big Three will keep doing whatever the hell they want to do as long as they're making money of it. Why take the risk of losing money when you can sell an older system that costs $2 to produce?

As for the PS2, they should keep making it if people are willing to buy it.
As annoying as it is to many core gamers that have moved on to new systems long ago, the fact is ps2 games still sell incredibly well. They're cheap to make and buy. Sure, we shouldn't expect any AAA titles to change the way we think about playstation 2 games, but that shit still sells and until somebody can convince all those ps2 owners to upgrade, it still will.
That being said, I would personally love to just ship all of the used ps2 games floating around to third world countries and call it a day. I wonder what kind of tax break Gamestop would get for that.
You see, this is the thing I don't get - who is it annoying to? I'll admit I'm somewhat of an anomaly as I still play a ton of PS2 games on my 60 gig PS3 (hell, I'm playing Shadow of the Colossus for the first time right now), but the PS2 provides a great resource for companies to make really great games that can still look really nice and have a fair deal going on in them for far cheaper than on an HD console (Persona motherfucking 4). But even then, how many great new games are coming out for the system? The last original game Sony made for PS2 that wasn't a PSP port was what? 2007? The games on the system fill a niche without alienating a massive consumer base, so who cares what they do?" And also, I'm not sure you know what "AAA title" means.
Here are the US console figures from 2009 (by NPD):

The PS2 will continue to sell well for a while because it has arguably the best and biggest library of games. I don't see any reason why you would want to stop distribution of a popular and profitable product. It goes against the very basics of business.
" @BreakfastKing said:Regarding your first point, perhaps it is just my perception of the gamers I know well that it is annoying. I probably should not have made such a generalization. I'm not going to argue that the ps2 didn't have its share of fantastic games and your mention there, Shadow of the Colossus, is certainly a prime example of that, however the Super Nintendo has a ton of classics as well but that doesn't mean people need to still put out new games for it (though wouldn't that be something :P)You see, this is the thing I don't get - who is it annoying to? I would agree with you that it is important for companies to have creative ideas that they can share with the world at a good price, however I don't think that the ps2 is the platform of choice. Each of the three current generation consoles offers some digital download options that are perfect for situations like these. While at the moment, many of these games are shovelware or maybe just limited in size or scope, it is a HUGE step in the right direction for budget games and independent developers alike.
As for new releases, you're absolutely right. Sony doesn't put out many of their own games on the system. In fact, about half of the handful of upcoming games on the ps2 are simply new iterations of sports titles. (Which they keep threatening to stop on the ps2 but haven't yet heh) I would certainly think that Madden 2011 would be considered a triple A title in terms of its huge numbers of annual sales alone however the kind of big games getting pushed out to the ps2 are doing far less for the industry than their equivelents on current generation systems.
" I wish they did and focus ALL there efforts on PS3. "Why? The PS2 is still making them money and I don't see Sony (or anybody really) making games for it anymore. What was the last important PS2 game, Persona 4 maybe? The system sells itself at this point so there's no need to market it, they're just throwing it out there for anyone who wants to play some older games.
I don't see how ending the PS2 would help anyone. The more supported consoles there are, the better it is for consumers. Consumers gain nothing if Sony abandons the PS2, they just lose a cheap alternative to the seventh generation consoles with an extensive video game backlog. And to be fair, I don't think Sony is withholding potentially successful PS3 games so their first party developers can make PS2 games, as doing so wouldn't make any sense.
Also, I have a new PS2 as of late, as my old one was starting to show it's age. I played Ace Combat 5 for two whole days, and I had a blast doing it. As such, I don't see a problem.
" @BreakfastKing: AAA has nothing to do with sales, just as an FYI. "AAA" refers to advertising budget and nothing more. "Ah I see. I guess it still fits my example but thanks for the clarification!
" Now that Mr. Korn is edumacated I will kill any belief that the PS2 should be canned in a single swoop~This pretty much ends this argument and thread. Someone lock this hehehe.
