Southampton Football Club are currently playing in League One of the English football league.  Southampton, or The Saints as they are commonly called, used to be an English Premier League team but have been relegated over the past few years down to League One.

Former stars of the club include:

    • James Beattie
    • Peter Crouch
    • Matthew Le Tissier
    • Alan Shearer
    Rival teams include:
    • Portsmouth

Currently the team are seen as one that should be pushing to promotion to the English Football League Championship (the second tier in the league ladder). As this team has been in the Premiership previously and were a strong top half finisher in the past, the decline has been blamed on mismanagment by previous owners.
The club has had a manager revolving door which caused problems. Glen Hoddle and Harry Redknapp are former managers who walked away due to issues with the clubs progression. Stars have left the club and prospects such as Theo Walcott have been sold on.
However recently the new chairman has started to spend cash on transfers and the club are trying to push forward.
Hopefully the south coast derby between Portsmouth and Southampton can take place again as this has not happened since an FA Cup round a few years ago due to Portsmouth being in a higher league than their rivals over the past few years.
