Spin-Off
CONCEPT
A game that takes gameplay mechanics, characters, or story elements from an existing series in a separate and different direction, sometimes changing genres along the way.

Overview

A spin-off is different from a sequel or a spiritual successor, in that a spin-off has concrete ties to its parent series, but is not treated as one of the main releases in it. Successful spin-offs are often sequelized and branch into their own sub-series, as with Paper Mario (Franchise) and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (Franchise). Sometimes a spin-off series even overshadows the original series to become the most prominent face of the franchise, as Persona (Franchise) did after being spun off from Shin Megami Tensei (Franchise) (outside Japan, at least).
