    Forever Second

For the first game ever fronted by Disney that I have ever played, I’m presently surprised. It’s not what I anticipated at all. If I am perfectly honest I was expecting a breeze of a game with some cool special effects to the likeness of a destructible environment Burnout kind of game.

On one hand you are met with the old school style of burnout by witnessing your rivals smash against each other while you build meter for your next construct of destruction to come crashing down on their unsuspecting heads.

And on the other you have what has to be one of the most challenging racers I have ever played. It’s not for the kind of person who fails first time and gives up, you will spend hours trying to scrape a better time just to try get that gold medal on some events and the computers catch up can seem a little ridiculous at times.

Although the game may prove a bit too challenging at some points there is always the kick you can get by going and playing online and crushing some players for the sadistic pleasure you crave or some single player offline races that can be done that aren’t necessarily in the “season” mode.

The mechanics of the game are truly original in the sense that not many, or even any games have used before. Each level can be changed in an instant leading to disastrous consequences as the city crumbles around them paving your way to victory. To activate these insanely effective level changers you need build up meter, by drifting, drafting and just barely surviving, to coheres the environment to obliterating your competitors, for a short time at least. But what is more problematic is when it starts happening to you, “it’s all fun and games until somebody loses a tire” is what my mum used to say and trust me when I lost my tire I truly flipped and possibly lost a few controllers in harmony to my near victory crashes.

As for the races, there is a massive variety of type that don't constrict the user to your average 1st place takes all. But instead they have a continuous point system that still rewards the player even if he/she finishes near the bottom of the pile gradually working their way to new cars and eventually new championships as the progressively get better. Most races do consist of your average elimination, endurance and your bog standard poll position races but both the demolition, helicopter attack and the barrel dodging missions have some really interesting courses and features that spice up the game play.

Unfortunately I haven’t got much to say about the online as I’m so late to actually picking up a copy that the scene is borderline dead and I was unable to get any games

It’s a great game for the times that you are winning but if you are prone to near explosive states then try to keep your cool. If you love gimmicky racers then you might love this but if you are looking for the next GT then it’s best you let this little fish slip through your net.

Incredible But Unbalanced: A Split Personality 0

Split/Second advertises itself as racing amped up with insane explosions. That's quite accurate, as the game is full of incredible driver-activated destruction wrapped up in a brilliant reality TV-inspired package. Beyond the huge explosions and exciting action, however, lies an unbalanced and occasionally frustrating experience that's all too reminiscent of other arcade racers, with annoying AI and questionable driving and gameplay mechanics that temper the explosive excitement. When Split/Seco...

Give me fuel, give me fire 0

Expect to see plenty of this When you think of a Jerry Bruckheimer or Michael Bay production, you think of big-budget, high gloss, action sequences with fast cars, multiple explosions and plenty of hair-raising moments. Vehicles are engulfed in flames left, right and centre, flipping into the air and careening out of control; buildings collapse upon the streets, shop windows are blown out, helicopters swoop down across the road and city centres are completely and utterly demolished...
