After playing through 'Splosion Man this weekend, I came to the realization that this is how a new Sonic game should be made. It's a fast timing based platformer that has a lot of variety. All the new Sonic games last about 6 hours and cost $60 and aren't fun . Also, they keep shoehorning in stupid mechanics that distract from the core Sonic gameplay. 'Splosion Man gives you many hours of gameplay, as well as a lot of replay value if you want to go for good times. Why not give sonic a wall jump and make a game in this style?

I'm not sure they need to copy the gameplay mechanics, but I'd love to see Sega develop a game similar to this on XBLA/PSN rather than wasting their time with those full retail releases that are complete garbage.

All the good sonic games have been two dimensional. They just need to go back to their roots.

And innovate it just a little bit.

Actually that's a pretty good idea. I might actually buy a Sonic game like that but I really don't see Sega returning to the roots of Sonic after the recent slew of Sonic games they've put out.

The 3D Sonic games like Sonic Unleashed isn't terrible. If you actually play the game then you would know that and not have Sonic go the half-ass route - have Sega abandon their 3D efforts and go back to 2D.

Also, aren't people like that with Castlevania and Metroid?

I would love to see Sega do some new XBLA/PSN games featuring Sonic and other cool Mega Drive/Genesis characters.  One thing worth pointing out though, Sonic Rush didn't do very well sales-wise, and probably didn't do much to encourage Sega to move in that direction.
