I've been following Spore since early '06.

I bought Spore on Monday, hoping it was going to be the game shown in the earlier demos. After I started the creature phase (which IMO felt really unpolished and had klunky controls), I started thinking, "Okay, it's not bad, but not what I hoped". So I still kept playing and got to the Tribal Phase which I found a little easy but pretty fun, nothing great. Once I got to the Civilization Phase, the game just really started to grow on me. It felt more like a real RTS but with with the ability to form alliances, make cities, use special abilities; and it just felt more like Spore.

Today I finally entered the Space Phase and I must have played for close to 6 hours today if not more. The Space Phase really is where the real game starts and everything else to me feels like it was a long tutorial. It has elements from every phase mixed together. There are so many toys to play with and the game just feels a lot less restricted and less linear linear; it's amazing. You can sculpt planets, blow up planets, make planets inhabitable, make planets uninhabitable, play around with your cities, make new cities, make allies, make enemies, fight enemies... the list goes on. The most amazing part is that you can explore the galaxy for hours and still only see a tiny percentage of the whole thing.

At first I thought, "Okay, this is an average game. Not bad...", but now Spore is definitely one of my favorite games and I'm sure to be playing it for a long while.

    How about you?

Yeah it really is. Good luck conquering the universe! :P

I've reached to the tribal stage and I can't continue the game because the gameplay is so damn repetitive especially in the tribe stage.

Like you said, the space stage is where the game really starts. And to me, that it's downfall. I've been playing space stage for.. how many hours now, and the other stages just can't compare. Cell through civilization stage seem like they last less than five minutes. They give no substance to the final outcome. They're not tutorials, they're not practice. Once you hit space, it's a completely different game. And the stages leading up to it are unneeded. They should have just cut everything else and called it "Space".

    I liked every stage really
    Cell is basically Pacman perfected
Creatures fun if you try to hunt down epics with elaborate schemes or make flying baby-eating monkey people
Tribal felt a bit clunky though, weak hybrid between creature and civ
Civ felt a little static to me at first, but when I managed to herd an epic creature into an enemy city (big fun) it started to feel a bit more interactive
I haven't gotten that far in the Space stage, but its been fun pissing off all my neighbours by raining toucan-people into there cities :)

sounds like im going to have to push to the space stage.

I enjoyed the cell stage enough, and i think i could play it again. It doesnt go on long enough to get sick of it.

The land stage was startng to turn into a little bit of a grind, and the socialising is for kids. The combat is pretty dam basic. I found this stage is basically all about messing with the creature creator, which is pretty fun. I also enjoyed the touches of having a UFO suddenly fly over, Or a some rogue creature come in an destroy some of you allies when your socialising with them.

The RTS stage is where i started to lose some enthusiasm for the game, There is no real strategy involved, and any sort of management of creatures is hopeless. At least it doesnt last to long, i bludgeoned through it.

Just started the Civ stage, I really hope its going to be an improvement over the RTS stage.

I cant really see myself playing through this again at this point. I think its getting handed along to my sim loving casual gaming sister. Although she will have to use my online account apparently (bullshit). Im not really feeling at this point like its worth the $99 dollars ive spent on it.

I agree with you Vlademir, and space stage is just... epic...

However there are so many questions I want to know the answers to, like can I find my other planets (saved games) in the galaxy? Or can I explore the entire galaxy and not just the nice little tentacle that I started on?
My only complaint about space stage is that piloting during a dogfight can be quite inefficient. I use up so much power using the mega laser on chaps like pirates because they have a habit to fly close to the ground and I keep on missing them and hitting a tree, herd or city and using up lots of energy. I'd like the ability to jump into a 'fighter' mode and go take them on like in a Namco dogfighter game.

Creature stage is pretty good depending on the planet. For example, one planet I am on has a continent with heaps of mountain ranges, bays et cetera and so there's a great deal to explore, at least for me and my spore-raptors :) Just wish I could migrate to other continents, or that there were features like auto-feed or more missions (other than "go find something to eat!").

My biggest complaint is that as soon as you evolve limbs you're on land and that's that. I'd be better if they allowed you to create sea or amphibious creatures that can "age-up" (forgive the age of empires terminology) in those habitats... A bit like how in Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds where you could be the gungans and build *some* underwater buildings.

And Civ mode lacked decent military options ;) Damn how I wanted to send heaps of kazuu's to meaningless fighting :D

Nonetheless, great game once you're in space.

Yes, you can go through the whole galaxy... there are plenty of secrets to find. Just don't go towards the middle o_o.

To get anywhere in the galaxy, you need the upgrade that gives you maximum travel distance.

I really liked Spore, just not the civ and tribal stages. Cell, creature, and space stages were epic :)

I had a spore grow on me once. The doctor told me it was nothing to worry about.
