Is it Free to play yet, and if so is it worth it?

F2P yet.
January 17th is the date.
And is it worth it? It's free, so you don't have anything to lose. I think it's a pretty fun game, it has a lot of flaws, but the space combat is really great, and if you're a Star Trek fan there's some good stuff in the missions and customisation. If you have no interest in Trek though, I don't think there's much that would give it any lasting appeal.
@dice66111: I played it during the free month after launch but then gave it up. Like WinterSnowblind said it has a lot of flaws, but there is a lot of good atmospheric stuff in there and the space combat is pretty neat. I'm thinking of giving it another go during the holidays now that it's free.
Oh cool I didn't know that it was going free to play so soon. Wouldn't hurt to check it out especially if it's free, and I'm curious to see how much the game has changed since launch.
@Vodun: One of the biggest problems is still the utter lack of content. You can literally do everything in about a month, I have no idea why people have been subscribing for almost two years..
F2P is perfect for this game. You can play through some of the missions, buy a few things you like on the store then stop and come back after a few months to see what they've added, etc.
They just added the duty officer system, which is a really great little micro-management game that helps it feel more like you're commanding a ship, and they're busy hyping up new missions that will involve the Enterprise-F, which is pretty exciting too.
I remember really liking it in the closed/open beta. Space combat was a simplified star trek bridge commander (which is one of my favorite games). The away team things were standard MMO gameplay but I was fine with it. I had great potential back then and I don't know if they acted on it or not. But man I can't wait for it to go F2P.
@Buzzkill: It's Perfect World who own it, they're not exactly a shady company. Just expect it to have a lot more in the way of microtransactions.
Like I said though, F2P microtransactions should suit the game a lot better than the subscription Atari forced onto it.
Early access for F2Pstarts tomorrow, for anyone who's ever been a subscriber.
@PhatSeeJay: If I shoot you a message are you able to invite into the GB fleets?
I have 2 fresh "freep" toons I would like to play with other duders. I'm not so deep into TOR that I can't load this up too for my DOFFs. :)
My only other fleet preference would be Jupiter Force, and although I love the show I'm just not sure if it's worth the hoops.
I'm also interested in teaming up with other duders. I just started playing again and the game is great but feels like it is wayyyyyyy better playing with others.

HOW'S THAT LIFETIME SUBSCRIPTION WORKING OUT FOR YOU JEFF?
I wonder what he gets in compensation..
I've been in the early access to F2P content for about a week or two and a lot of it has changed, the quests/episodes have been redone, and there's A LOT of players around, probably down to server consolidation. also, you fly around without the astrometrics map :O

Didn't know it was going f2p...that's a bummer for the people who bought lifetime subscriptions
It's really not a bummer, the Gold perks mean something to the people that play STO every night, or have played for the past 2 years. And they are still selling lifetime subs in fact.
