Why are more people pre-ordering the deluxe edition?

I opened Origin thinking maybe there's some place where I can preload the open beta for tomorrow and noticed the deluxe edition is more popular than the standard edition, which I don't understand.

I don't see any difference that should justify the extra 20 dollars. They get a few cards, a few earlier unlocks and some attachments. That's it. I don't wanna judge, since some of you may have preordered that version, but I can't help wondering what these people are thinking. It's not my problem, except technically it is, since it leads to more bad preorder culture. The standard price of games is gonna be 80 dollars, perhaps sooner rather than later.

@ezekiel: Because that "Most Popular" tag is clearly a lie. That or people are desperate to play it early.

Probably because they get to play it 3 days early. Some people really love star wars like that.

I'm pretty sure Origin just tags their more expensive version of every game with "most popular."

It's the most popular based on a straw poll of EA executives and shareholders.

    A couple of things:

    1. I wouldn't be surprised if EA just puts the 'most popular' on the more expensive version

    2. If you are still in the market for PRE-ORDERING a DIGITAL release, then it makes some sense that more people might be ordering the version that allows them to play a few days early.

The standard price of games should have been a lot more than $80 a long time ago, $60 is nearly unsustainable for AAA unless the game sells a bajillion copies, thus the reason everything is a sequel. If anything, the $60 price tag is holding back gaming far worse than any preorder bonuses ever will.

In general pre-orders for games have been lower and have continued dropping since Activision commented on this a while back, but what has offset this trend has been the steady rise of special editions. I would be very much inclined to believe the deluxe is out pacing the special as most pre-orders are from high spenders or those gamers seriously invested and playing a few days early is a very big incentive for both groups and its frigging Star Wars.

I'll tell you why I got it.

I got it because with my Gamer's Unlocked card from Best Buy it's literally 5 dollars more than just buying the base game itself. Granted that doesn't address the Origin thing but it's a big reason I picked it up.

The Epic Star Cards and early unlocks are a nice incentive too as unlocking the epic additions is all down to chance. So having some guaranteed cards is great.

Yea really the only reason to preorder is to preinstall or to get the deluxe edition perks so it makes sense.

I preordered the new WWE games (yes, yes I know) for that reason only

Despite the season pass being a tremendous rip off this year, the deluxe version of 2K18 is almost necessary if you're planning on downloading things off Community Creations. The base game seems to be a fairly well rounded package if you don't put much stock into story modes, but 2K's adopted a dlc model that's really frustrating.

Most popular doesn't mean it's selling more. Most popular can mean: "At EA we expect this to be the most popular." "Among our bosses this is the most popular." "The standard version is so unpopular that this has to be more popular, right?" or the most likely "We estimate it will sell at least 4 more units if we call it most popular."

Playing the game 3 days early is the main reason for sure.
