I've seen it spelled "Artoo-detoo" before, but I've never seen "See-Threepio".

It's all a plot by Lucas. He wants Star Wars to seem more and more stupid so that eventually we forget the Original Trilogy ever existed.

That's the phonetic way, it's the CORRECT way of spelling the character's names on official Star Wars promotional materials.

C-3PO and R2-D2 is just their common spelling.
