I doubt this is part of some anti-gay Bioware agenda, I mean shit, these guys made Dragon Age II.

This is probably the cheapest and easiest way to implement same sex relationships, and considering that the dev team for TOR probably consists of two people with a jar of pennies at this point, it's hardly surprising.

More an oversight than an actively hurtful thing. They just wanted to add in same-sex relationships and did it at the same time adding in a new planet. They put the two together and failed to see the significance in leaving it that way. My guess is that it will be changed pretty quickly (even if some quests are just edited for the gay characters to appear on other planets for specific scenes etc...).

This is the least of that game's problems (but I guess from their point of view, when you run a f2p game - even bad publicity while get at least one new person to try the game and give them a little money).

I understand that Bioware is working on properly bringing same-gender relationships to the game in the future, and I do think people are picking on Bioware too much for this when they are probably the most committed developer in the industry when it comes to doing non-heterosexual relationships justice, and when they're one of the few developers who even give a damn about same-gender relationships, but none the less, the "Gay Planet" seems like a very poor and ham-fisted way to deal with the situation they are in. Instead of implementing a half-hearted stop-gap solution, they should have taken the time to make sure whatever they had produced in terms SGRs was well-made and did the concept justice before rolling it out.

It's a video game... also seeing as BioWare was totally cool with my getting my lesbian on in Mass Effect, why are they not okay with it in ToR?

    @BlastProcessing said:

This is getting absurd. Wouldn't the right thing be having gay romance everywhere, instead of segregating it to a specific planet? This is basically the gaming equivalent of negro water fountains.

Also, are homosexuals getting tired of Bioware's shenanigans? I would imagine so.

Negro water fountains helped the economy because it led to twice the number of installations. Suddenly segregation's gone and plumbers are out of work. Go figure some libtard doesn't understand how the economy works.

The art of turning a good thing into a bad thing. Whoever wrote that is a genius. I'm surprised people even believed that they created a segregated gay planet considering Bioware are one of the few developers to even touch the subject of homosexuality and have done so rather well in my opinion. They created a universe where sexual orientation wasn't even talked about. I don't even remember hearing characters be surprised at another's sexual orientation during the Mass Effect games or even Dragon Age for that matter.

How strangely sensationalist. They explain that adding it in how they want is taking more time and resources than expected, especially with the free to play swap. That suggests a desire to continue to develop that content down the road, and that the current situation isn't the end of dev time on this specific feature.

I don't think Bioware is the one who has a problem with gay and lesbian characters, I think Lucasarts is.

In the entirety of star wars cannon there is only one character that is gay. One. Two if you count juhani. And I think a list of every single EU SW character could fill an enclylopedia.

This isn't Bioware's fault. I mean, SWTOR is plenty mediocre, but this move isn't malicious at all.

Remember, this is the company that makes you BEAT BACK hamfisted advances from every single one of your party members (regardless of sex) in all their recent games.

Seriously, that shit is annoying. I hate Bioware romances, and how it defines their games so much. But that's a topic for another time.

Well, it got people talking about The Old Republic for a couple of minutes at least.

Also, I have it on good authority that Jabba the Hutt takes it in the butt. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that. It was pretty lame and possibly insensitive. I love gay people.

It has nothing to with either. Just how they add content. The story is being twisted.

Not disagreeing about the Star Wars canon though.

I just find some of the reaction funny considering Bioware is one of the very few developers to have homosexual romance in their games.

Man. That is a spectacular headline. Spectacular because it draws so much attention to something that is nowhere near as insane as the title would otherwise suggest.

    Follow the Bioware development mindset:

    • Releases game with NPC romances
    • Fans complain that, unlike their prior games in their development catalogue, there are no same-sex relationship options (I think this is a warranted outcry, given Bioware's larger-than-normal LGBT community)
    • While creating new content (read: Makeb), they decide to work same-sex relationship options into that new content as a response to the fans

This isn't a 'gay planet.' You aren't going to see lesbian Amazonian tribes, or gay space clubs, or anything like that. Rather, this is new narrative content that happens to accommodate something that the fans have been asking for. Naturally, re-recording all prior relationships in the game to include male and female characters is way more of a hassle than melding it with the new content.

Everything about this, from the sensationalist headline, the comments from either "side" of the issue, and the way Bioware has spectacularly bungled same/intersex relationships (while at the same time also being one of the only developers to try), make me shake my head.

I'm not going to look through the Bioware forums to confirm this is an actual comment, but nothing could be worse than it:

"Star Wars is a family-based story with nothing to do with SGR," wrote one user. "Please, please, please Bioware do not allow SGR in Star Wars The Old Republic. It will ruin the game and make a lot of people leave it."

What in all fucks is wrong with people?

And now I leave this conversation because the last time the subject was brought up on these forums I made one simple diplomatic comment and wound up being dragged into a shittstorm.

Good on them for keeping their promises.

But they kinda invited this story - even if it is wrong - by the way they announced it, they should have waited with the gay content until it was done instead of releasing it one planet at a time (or in this case probably a planet, then the rest of the galaxy)...
