I'm thinking about picking it up tonight. Any big reasons I shouldn't? Never played an MMO before, but I loved KOTOR.

Yes. It comes with game time.

No. Other than some queue issues, it's a pretty smooth ride.

It does, but like with other MMOs, it's going to require you to sign up for a subscription before you can play. I'd be surprised if you couldn't cancel that before you had to pay any actual money, but I haven't tried.

I'm liking it a lot so far. The only downside I can see is that it is definitely an MMORPG - if you don't like those types of games, you won't like it. I personally love the way MMOs play, so I'm enjoying my time.

I may have jumped the gun here...

I can't find any reference to Star Wars in Origin or on EA's website, even though that's where the official site's buy link takes me. How on Earth do I buy this game?

If you create an account on the website there is a step by step checklist with links to get you playing. You can try that.

Down for maintenance, apparently. This may be a sign that this is a bad idea...

They announced the maintenance like a week ago. Then they had an update a few days ago to say that it was still on schedule.

I know i might seen odd for saying this. But to me it seems really dumb that they make you pay $60 for the game and then ask you to pay again before you are even allowed to play the game you just bought. Surly they are going to make enough money off subscriptions to make the game a free download.
Though after what i have heard about the cost of developing this game it actually comes as no surprise to me that they are charging for the box.

So much for impulse-purchasing a new MMO, I guess. Any idea when the site is due back up?

They don't ask you to pay again. You can not have a subscription plan at all, if you don't want one.

I bought the game and a 60-day card. I have 90 days of game time and I only put in a credit card for Origin for the original purchase.

Also, this is how any retail box MMO works.

It currently says that the website will be back up in approximately 3 hours. So check back in a little bit.

First I hear of it. Thus far I was always able to play my free 30 days without doubling down on a subscription. Kinda pissed to be honest. Oh well - just ordered some gametime now. Nonetheless - this is aggrivating.

And the bloody site is unresponsive as all hell. Being in queue for every pageload sucks. I really wonder when EA finally gets their shit together. Their online infrastructure is a joke.

I'm really fed up with this game now, and I haven't even been able to play it yet. All this behind the scenes website shit is seriously fucking me off.

"Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ is not available in your region

To maintain a high quality of service, only certain regions worldwide will be able to pre-order Star Wars™: The Old Republic™.

Sign up for the newsletters on SWTOR.COM to learn when the game will be available in your area."

Alright, that does it. Fuck this game. I know for a fact other Australians have it now.

So ends my attempt to purchase The Old Republic.

Turns out they are "Targeting a March 1st release date."

Seems like the kind of information that should come up when you click "buy this game right now" on their website.
