Star Wars: The Old Republic
Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Dec 20, 2011
Star Wars: The Old Republic is a massively-multiplayer role-playing game set 300 years after the events of BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic series, but still approximately 3,600 years before the events of the films.
Star Wars: The Old Republic Releasing Sometime Before, Uh, March 31, 2012
Electronic Arts and BioWare are betting big on Star Wars: The Old Republic, easily the highest-profile competitor to World of Warcraft since Blizzard assumed genre dominance, but nailing down a release date has been a constantly moving target. In discussing its latest fiscal results, publisher EA was just as cagey about when The Old Republic will be released. Their only guarantee? Before March 31, 2012.
"We are preparing the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic," said EA CEO John Riccitiello on today's financial call. "The launch date, while in our fiscal year, is not yet certain."
In EA's own breakdown for the next year, the company "assumes" The Old Republic will ship within the calendar year (read: before the end of 2011), but has baked in the possibility of a slip into 2012. Just today, BioWare and EA announced Mass Effect 3, originally scheduled for holiday 2011, is now early 2012.
"While we fully anticipate launching Star Wars: The Old Republic in Q2 or Q3," said CFO Eric Brown, "the low end of our guidance range assumes the outside possibility of a January launch."
If you're not following EA's explanation so far, here's a summary: The Old Republic's coming this fiscal year and expects it before 2011's end...but there's a chance it won't actually arrive until next year. Okay.
Unsurprisingly, EA believes the launch of The Old Republic will be "the biggest event of the year."
"We currently have over one million double-opt-in beta testers for the world’s first story-driven, fully
voiced MMO," said EA Games president Frank Gibeau. "Everyone is waiting for us to announce the ship date… Sorry, but that’s not going to happen today. We’re holding the date for two reasons--first, we don't want to tip off the competition; second, we want more data from the beta test to guarantee a spectacular experience at launch."
The wait continues. Ironically, this all comes on Star Wars Day. May the 4th be...oh, nevermind.

So is this going to come out at the same time as Mass Effect 3? Are EA and BioWare trying to corner both the single player and multiplayer sci-fi audiences?

" @MooseyMcMan said:No, it's going to be an unskippable one when you first boot up the game, just like in that Need for Speed game." So is this going to come out at the same time as Mass Effect 3? There didn't seem to be any mention of March 2012 for TOR Patrick, at latest it would be January, as stated, "the low end of our guidance range assumes the outside possibility of a January launch."
Pre-order TOR and get a lightsaber in ME3?" @ajamafalous said:

" @ajamafalous: You know what they say about Krogans with monocles? "Tell me, what do they say?
The perfect time to launch this is the day the blu ray movies are out imo or within that month.
I'm so eager to blow through all the content in a month ;)
Sigh, I want to play this game so badly...but then I remember that it's an MMO :(
I wish they would just make another single-player Star Wars RPG D:
This summer is probably the best time to release a new MMO. Even though WoW is still popular it's burnt out people who've been playing 3+ years. Which is why Rift still seems to have decent population even if it's a clone. They thirst for new blood.
" @MooseyMcMan said:I want a light saber in ME3... does that make me a bad person? Don't answer that, of course it does. I'd settle for some Mass Effect style Storm Trooper armor though.Pre-order TOR and get a lightsaber in ME3?" @ajamafalous said:

I'll probably step in to see what all the fuss is about, and as much as I love star wars and bioware, GW2 seams to be way more compelling and interesting in what it's trying to do.I'll be playing Guild Wars 2 though. Don't think i'll go subscription based for a very long time."
They get one Launch Day to do this right. Too much hype and the cynics with it will tear it down if it doesn't perform at least a base line entertaining level. Do it right, and EA will be swimming in more filthy profit, they know not to screw this up.

I remember I was going to play this over summer...once that got thrown out the window so did most of my interest.
" " Star Wars: The Old Republic, easily the highest-profile competitor to World of Warcraft sinceBlizzard assumed genre dominance" yea sure, nothing will take wow down, it's pretty impossible IMO. "I knew somebody was going to take that statement the wrong way and say something like "nothing can kill WoW" or whatever.
He wasn't saying that TOR will take WoW down, or even equally compete with it for that matter. Patrick was saying that TOR is basically the "most moneyed" MMO to be produced since WoW gained a strong foothold in the genre. In other words no MMO that's come out since WoW has had the amount of money spent on it (or a bigger licensed attached to it) than TOR. That's all.
Ha I remember playing MMO's than I realized there is so much better shit to do like play other games.
I'm glad they're not trying to rush it to release. It's probably the game with the biggest chance of "dehtroning" World of Warcraft -- though I don't actually believe that is going to happen -- and pushing it onto a consumerbase half-finished isn't going to win them any kind of awards.
I think they're being cagey until E3 in June. EA will have a press conference and that where they'll give us a date or at the very least a much smaller window. They might even announce the beta then.

All basically dead-on-arrival."
