The Definitive Update to One of the Best Games Ever
I loved the original Starcraft. I never played a single online multiplayer match, but I've played through the campaigns countless times as well as numerous comp stomp matches. While I'm not great at RTS games and don't typically enjoy Sci Fi, I loved the epic storyline, varied and unique yet balanced races, and the simple yet deep game systems. Starcraft 2 basically takes all the things I liked about Starcraft and makes them better. In a nutshell, the game is gorgeous, has all of the classic voices/sounds that I still cherish from the original, delivers a great campaign with better missions that Starcraft or Brood Wars, and adds numerous interesting and creative units to each of the races.
In the original Starcraft, I enjoyed playing Protoss, but I never felt like I was very good with them. In this game, I instantly took to the new units and found a lot of fun army combinations that drove me to experiment and play just one more match. If I can say one great thing about the game, it is that it makes each of the races feel more powerful while still being balanced. While I know that sounds contradictory, I think any players of the original game can relate. The Protoss air units, for example, felt much more versatile and deadly contrasted against Scout and Corsair of old. Part of this is likely due to the game looking much better than the original, but I think the developers have really accomplished something difficult by managing to make me feel like my chosen race got beefed up while not feeling unfair.
Blizzard has really delivered a hit here and I can't say enough good things about this game. Any RTS fan should absolutely pick this game up without delay. For those who have fond memories of the original Starcraft that don't know if they want to get back on the saddle, I say buy this game without a second thought. I may well never play on online multiplayer match, but I feel that I more than got my money's worth with the fantastic campaign and hours of offline matches against a CPU opponent. This is easily one of my favorite games of all time and I am eternally thankful that Blizzard had the sense to make a good thing better rather than trying to fix something that wasn't broken.
