Surprise! Seattle-based developer Undead Labs is behind the helm of a zombie-survival open-world game for Xbox Live Arcade, the studio has announced. The project, which is being called "Class3” at the moment, appears to have an action slant. Promises of cool guns, fast cars, gore, and hand-to-hand fighting are being made, but it looks like the real meat and potatoes of the game will be the survival--rationing food and ammo, rescuing other survivors, and setting up defensive fortifications are all actions you’ll be doing, in addition to splitting zombie heads.

And here’s the hook: Undead Labs is preparing to create some sort of zombie-themed MMO in the future, and “Class3” will serve as its foundation. The kickback that you’ll see comes in the form of some interesting social features. “The open world develops in real-time, shaped by player actions, with content determined by their choices and the ever-increasing zombie threat,” the press release reads. On its web site, the studio reveals that the game "supports 1-2 players" via Xbox Live or the same screen.

Sounds cool, but maaan, I killed a whole lot of Zack already in Undead Nightmare.

Too much zombie stuff, man. Imagining the initial developer brainstorming meetings for zombie games just makes me think of Mitch Hedberg...

This game sounds really interesting.

I hope it is persistent instead of the usual round based zombie waves.  If I have to start from the beginning each time I fire it up then I'll pass, but I would love a 1-2 player offline MMO for now if that is what they are working towards.

Reality check for those enthused about the MMO: Undead Labs has been working on it for years and their website for it has been dark for about just as long.

still waiting for the ZOMG-XPTO-FATHER-OF-ALL-ZOMBIE-GAMES... It has to be a massive open world rpg shooter with super powers and magic and zombie killing action and loot and multiplayer... and... and... :( I should stop dreaming right? RIGHT?!

Slow zombies, or fast? I hope slow because the game mechanics mentioned sound more suited for a gradual, foreboding mob.

Sounds like the game is very early in development.  Not too much to get excited about.

Makes me think of Survival Crisis Z. Except, you know, it'll probably look a lot better. Because SCZ looked terrible. Artwise, I mean. It was a great game.

Unless I can hold up in a Wal-Mart and fight off other humans trying to come take my supplies and use my control of the Wal-Mart as a tool to manipulate my position in the remaining society, I don't care.
