Typical cut is 40/60 or 30/70 in terms of retailer:publisher, so Valve made something on the order of a few hundred million dollars.

Dude, don't bring that junk 'round here.  It's common knowledge that the consoles are more profitable than the PC, and likely will be for the foreseeable future.  It's not an insult against the almighty PC, but simple common sense.

If anything, this demonstrates the folly of the gaming industry and fandom's obsession with "number 1."  It goes without saying that consoles make more money than the PC, but there's still quite a bit of money to be made in PC gaming, as Valve and Blizzard continue to prove.

Now run along, fanboy, and let the grownups talk amongst themselves.

I'm not sure what upset you.   The Wii platform and the PS2 platform (150 million sold to date) are more successful than the Xbox and will be in the future.  My point is that it doesn't really mean anything.

@YukoAsho: K. But. PC makes more money than PS3. So. Throwing all 3 consoles together like that makes as much sense as me throwing Windows games in with iOS, because then Windows/iOS would come out on top. The arbitrary distinctions you make are not, in fact, 'common knowledge'.

@KaosAngel: You see, I admit for being an idiot and deciding on my buy based off of reviews. Not a single reviewer actually mentioned the problems with Black Ops at all. Therefore leading to a crap ton of people actually buying the game. So I'll take half responsibility for my purchase because I usually don't make a purchase till way later on when other people posted up their opinions on the game, but the other half belongs to the reviewers for not mentioning the problems.

@BrainSpecialist: Mafia 1 had a huge PC fanbase and expectations were high for Mafia 2, even though it was disappointing a lot of people bought it just for the continuation of the story from the first one.

As a console gamer, envious of all you PC gamers with your sexy rigs, I truly hope PC gaming stays healthy.  Some of the most awesome things in gaming have come from PC gaming.

Sure, as long as people also stop saying it is when something expected for the PC doesn't happen or gets canceled.

Well, Steam is doing well, that's for sure. Though two of my very few PC purchases this year were Blizzard products.

Cool to see Metro 2033 up there. That really looked incredible on PC.

" damn. thats great to hear. i love steam and i am glad that it proves a great service (with constant sales on good titles) can be super successful.   i keep saying that if they just reduce the price of games they would likely sell more. i often buy things on sale on steam with no regret. but when $60 is on the table i get really picky. Value does a lot of things right by us and I am glad it is working out well for them. "

Good call sir, and I know someone who feels this way named Gabe Newell.

Hey guys and gals, remember this?

I always thought there was something to it, but nothing ever seemed to happen as a result.

EDIT: Looking back on this post I made 7 minutes ago, I guess Steam sales is the thing that happened as a result. Still, it didn't seem like any other distribution services picked up on it.

I was really worried Metro 2033 didn't do well and I'm so happy that it did so well.  Chaos Rising as well (and yes I would say good for Mafia II despite the mixed response).  Overall it's a good mix of big hype mainstream and PC gamer PC games.

That's pretty damn impressive. I wonder how much of that was made just during the Christmas sales.

The only people who say PC gaming is dead are people who have never owned or experienced a great rig or exclusive game.

Their also people who start their anti-pc post with "I used to be a big PC gamer, but..." blah blah blah lies blah Crysis was a tech demo blah halo was my first shooter.

    I love my 360, PS3 and PC. Do I win a prize?
