I really liked the first Steamworld Dig. Possibly more than the second. These kinds of "dig for ore while creating platforming routes" games have been around since at least the 90s so it's nothing new, but the aesthetics are good and it's a satisfying formula, digging and getting upgrades and slowly making your way down. There's not that much to say about it because it's so simple, but it really captures a lot of what used to make gaming fun prior to the super complicated controls and stories and the rest (not that those are bad.) Just simple, enjoyable, fun with a nice gloss.

Nothing to say other than that these games are great and pretty addictive. I really enjoy the loop of tunneling further and further down -> collecting loot until your pack is filled -> surfacing to sell and get upgrades. Every time they announce a game Steamworld X I'm a little disappointed that X != Dig 3.

@zombiepie: Tell us how you really feel!

I agree that it's not a great area compared to others in the game and the final boss fight is pretty meh but I'm a little surprised at the intensity of the reaction. I thought it was still an okay time, if a bit frustrating.

I've played through this game a couple times now. The first 3 or so hours of it are perfect. The last hour really starts to drag though. Still a great game though and I haven't really liked anything else in the Steamworld series as much. I have been thinking of going back to Steamworld Dig 2 though since I haven't played it since 2017.

@ben_h: I finished Dig 2 this year (started it in 2022). I like it, but it's much more "metroidvaniaish" than Dig 1 with a lot less focus on the simple loop. I think that in some ways makes it not as fun, because the best parts of the game tend to be when you're having your own fun rather than taking on the designed levels.

I'd really enjoy a 3 that goes back to basics. Maybe expands the abilities and the economy somewhat (which 2 did pretty well) but less of a focus on "normal" platforming and more on exploration and digging. The first game did that so well, until the final level, which angered @zombiepie so much they felt the need to use *gasp* salty language.
