Steven Polge created argubly the strongest bot AI for Quake 1. His "Reaper Bots" were widely touted to have the illusion of playing against actual human beings. This was due to Polge's decision to code the AI to learn the levels as it played through them and run away if low on health and/or ammo. The Reaper bots would also execute different strategies (as in sniping or camping) depending on past successes or failures.
Polge was hired by Epic Games to code the AI for Unreal Tournament and has worked on many titles since then.
