Take it from us, he never takes that thing off.
Take it from us, he never takes that thing off.
Capcom's Unity blog continues to impress, this time with a PDF release of the Street Fighter IV guide the company sent to reviewers prior to the game's release. There isn't a ton of info in here that you can't get from the in-game moves lists, but you could print this thing out and have a nice hard-copy guide to all the ultra combos and such sitting on your coffee table, or wherever it is you play games. There's also a lot of nice art in there.

The most valuable part, really, is the interview with community duder and all-around Street Fighter badass Seth Killian, after whom the game's last boss is named. (Yeah, really.) Seth gets into serious depth on the creation and use of focus attacks, the importance of canceling moves, and a bunch of other high-level topics. If you're looking to step up your game--and judging by the low number of people I've been seeing online who are even using things like focus at all, there may be a lot of you--this might be a good place to start.

Plus, it's just a neat and generous gesture from Capcom, whose community effort seems to be all about that lately. Hooray!

This may swing my decision to get SFIV, I've been debating it for a while but having never really played much Street Fighter I was a little unsure about getting into a different style of fighting game... Might find it less intimidating now!

Wasn't this something distributed to reviewers, that they're now making available to the public?

Plus, this PDF tells you nothing more than the command move list that you can access from the start menu, or the manual.

As damn pretty as this thing is, it's a lacklustre response to the criticism it has received for not being a noob friendly game.

Not a bad move from Capcom, even though I don't believe anyone can get better at SFIV using that guide. There's just not enough solid info in there. That being said, if they're willing to reach out to the community, to make Street Fighter accessible to the larger public, this is a good first step.

Fantastic, I have been using quite a few focuses, but I rarely ever see people do focus cancels and stuff like that, I rarely use them myself. Some of the hard trials that involve focus cancels I can't even get my head around.

Did anyone see the Capcom-Unity 1st training video.  Far more helpful (http://www.capcom-unity.com/snow_infernus/blog/2009/02/27/basics_of_sfiv_tutorial).  Would love to see more vids like this to teach some of the more nuanced aspects of the fighting system.

According to David Crislip (Capcom), Seth was primarily named after Adam & Eve's third child: Cain, Abel, and Seth.   As well as being a shout out to Mr. Killian's namesake. :)

To my knowledge they made four of those training videos, but they're all a little too basic.

I like the artwork, but it's like a slightly worse version of the instruction manual, only it takes a couple seconds to load each page.

I was not aware that Seth was named after a real person. Now I know who to kill to make anger subside... Seth Killian, you said?

@ Cheapoz  - It's a lot more noob friendly than most games, to be honest. Most of us know SF but haven't really played it beyond the button mashing days of our youth. How can you expect to know the ins-and-outs? It's a complicated game. It takes some practice and a bit of research online, just like any gametype you would be unfamiliar with. The game tries to help though, and does a nice job. I mean, I bought the game four days ago and was a complete noob. Seth tore me up every round. Now I can beat the game on the hardest setting. Just takes practice.

As it gets later after release all the noobs that got there asses handed to them are going to quit playing, and all that will be left is the hard core badasses. I consider myself good at SF compared to my friends but get my ass handed to me online and I only see it getting worse as time goes on.

    this guide is utterly useless.

it contains less than the moves that are present in-game and the only additional data is the background story for every character.
it is not a guide and it does not help you become better at Street Fighter 4 :)

Which is why they have a 'Training mode' . I spent almost an entire night in training, using youtube videos and the instruction manual , I was really able to get a handle on how the thing works .
If you can knock an opponent down and time your attack right, it has a good chance of connecting ( about 65-80% against a medium skilled player) and then dash  and follow up with almost anything (including ultra).
This of course requires some manual dexterity, so its advisable to practice.

Also it helps against fireball spamming bastards who stick to one corner and start cramming one fireball after another. You can basically absorb the fireball and then dash to move forward slowly and steadily. Most probably your opponent will lose his nerve and probably go aerial (since he's trapped in a corner) just in time for you to dragon punch his ass (or just an aerial attack with any character). If he dosen't go aerial move close ang go for full charge focus and it will connect like crazy.
