Game » consists of 9 releases. Released Jul 18, 2008

    The rules are simple...

    • All characters allowed.
    • Double-Elimination brackets: The losers of each round will have another opportunity to fight for a placing.
    • Preliminary stages are played best of 3 rounds for a match, best of 3 matches to win.
    • All finals will be best of 3 rounds for a match, best of 5 matches to win.
    • Loser can change characters.
    • List the results in the comments section and I will update the brackets as necessary.
    • Try your best to contend with lag and d/c's. If there are any disputes that cannot be settled, we will try our best to do it here.

Which one of these fighters will prove the old axiom today?

    Here are the brackets

    Time Over

To get this done efficiently, I'm implementing a number of deadlines to make sure the matches get played in good time and people aren't left hanging around.

After a few requests, the first deadline won't be until the end of the first week of January (to ensure that any busy timetables will be cleared).

    Round 1

    • January 7th
    • Winners: Column 1
    • Losers: Column 1

    Round 2

    • January 9th
    • Winners: Column 2
    • Losers: Columns 2 & 3

    Round 3

    • January 11th
    • Winners: Column 3
    • Losers: Columns 4 & 5

    Round 4

    • January 13th
    • Winners: Finals
    • Losers: Finals

    Round 5

    • January 15th
    • !Grand Final!
    • (Non) Prize-Giving: The Winner basks in the heart-warming knowledge that he is King of the Giantbomb PS3 Street Fighter 4 scene.

@Jeffsekai: Yeah, thats what I had thought. Hopefully there are at least a few people up for it. I'm guessing there are a few PS3 players who hang around these boards.

I can run brackets for the PS3 tourney as well if you don't feel like it. I obviously don't own the game on PS3, but if there are enough sign-ups I say go for it. Just make it deadlines for rounds instead of holding the tourney all on the same day. This makes things easier.

@GetEveryone: Well we have had PS3 tourneys before if you look here and here, and they went pretty well so perhaps organize them like that.

Right now I wouldn't be up for it, but if we had it in January time then maybe.

@Keeng: Likewise. Well, ish. I started playing a lot again recently after some time off. I picked up Gouken, so I'm itching to get some decent matches going with some sort of actual end result rather than just ploughing through Championship constantly.

@mubress: Yeah, I took part in the first one early in the year, but failed miserably - the times really didn't work out. If its as succesful as those it would be great. I don't know how January works out for everyo ne else, but whenever is fine for me.

    @lordofultima:
Cheers mate, that would be fantastic. Hopefully there are a decent number of people.

I'll edit the first post with the names of those who are up for it. I'll put in mubress' name too, as there is no date decided yet anyway.

That's kinda funny, since depending on my busy my personal life's schedule is in Jan, I was totally thinking of doing another tournament myself. Depending how you looked at it, my past tournaments was more like RanBats than a traditional tournament; but that was because I wanted to encourage more play time for everybody so nobody gets peaced out in two matches. Even though I was satisfied with how my past tourneys went, there was always still some nagging issues that always told me it could have been better if I modified the rules some more.

Even if I do decide to do another one, I'll do it in February to not step on anyone's toes. It would be interesting to see another person's vision of an online tournament and perhaps I could learn something from that myself. I'm always down for helping out the scarce PS3 community on GB. Put me down.

@StaticFalconar: I enjoyed the league format before, but thought I'd see if we could get an old fashioned tournament set up. Like Loltima said, give deadlines for each round so there is time enough for each match, or something along those lines. It would be better if the PS3 SF4 GB (christ...) community was more vocal around here (if they exist). But yeah, we could try this and, whether its a success or not, I'd be up for anything you want to set up in the future.

Sweet, guys. Even if there isn't enough for a considerable tournament, we could at least get some sort of round-robin esque league. At this rate, though, that shouldn't be a problem. There were some other names in a PSN thread from the other day so hopefully they drop in.

5 Rounds please? It'd be nice if people stuck to the same character, but if we don't get that many people it can be casual enough that I won't care if we switch around.

5 rounds are poop, and character switching should be allowed if you lose. Just my views.

We have 13 people now, so if we could just get 3 more we could have a 4-stage tournament (which would be awesome).

    I was thinking:

3 round matches, best of 3 and (to completely rip off the other thread) having the final as 3 rounds, best of 5.

Character switching shouldn't be allowed (I have a bit of a problem with it taking some sense of cohesive play away). If people have a problem with this just say; this isn't a tyranny.

Finally, with Christmas around the corner, I'm not sure how the next couple of weeks work out for everyone. I may set the first round deadline to the start of January, that way there isn't a massive rush to get all the fights out of the way over a busy period. Then the following rounds have a deadline of a few days each or slightly longer so the ball starts rolling more quickly at that point.

Just ideas. I know mubress said specifically he wasn't open to playing before January. Would one match suit ok before then? Things to think about. If there's no disagreement I'll update the first post to reflect this.

Cool, just a couple of questions.

    Can the loser switch characters?
Will this be a double elimination style (winner's bracket, loser's bracket) ?
How will every body be seeded?

    1. loltima suggested this too, so if thats what you guys want then I'm all for it (all the better if I lose I guess).
    2. I think that's best, leaves more room for competition and everyone at least gets a placing.
    3. We totally rig it so you and I face in the finals... em, I honestly don't know. I have no idea of the skill of any of those involved, so... randomly?

@GetEveryone:  I suggest in answer to 3 that you assign everyone in the tournament a number 1-16 (or however many are in), write each number on a piece of paper, put them all in a hat and then draw out pairs of numbers that will fight each other.

@Neon941: Sure thing, dude. As soon as we've filled the spaces I'll get started in setting it up. I'll ask loltima about the brackets as he offered to run them. I was hoping to have a graphic on the first post rather than just a list of winners and losers etc.

@AlphaRanma: As far as I've seen these things usually wouldn't be open to you, but we still need a few people so I'll put your name down preliminarily.

@lordofultima: I've just gone and set up (plagiarised) the brackets myself. I'm having a massive problem replicating the picture on the main post though. I went through challonge and have it good to go, I just can't post the picture itself with any success; it appears far smaller than actual-size despite choosing the XL option.

I didn't realise that we would be playing at such a high level that counter-picking would be an issue :) You could always have people pick 2 characters before we start (that probably complicates things a bit too much though)

I agree with being able to change if you lose though.

@thegoldencat7: All spots filled I'm afraid. StaticFalconar mentioned putting on another soon after this though, and I may do another in the near future if this goes well. So there should be a more opportunities, dude. If there are any forfeitures, we can consider replacing dq's with those who missed out on spots.

And on that note: I've set everything up and we're basically good to go. The deadlines are listed, so those of you who are busy for the time being, don't worry. If, however, anyone wants/is able to play their first round in the meantime, go for it.

@StaticFalconar: yeah it's kind of getting me down, I'm 100% cool with losing to people, but I hate losing to their laggy connections.

I don't see it as I lost to lag, since there was no saying my opponent also missed thier combos because of lag as well. This is an online tournament with no money on the line so I just see it as a fun activity without putting my pride and ego on the line.

@StaticFalconar: That is true, but it's hard to tell who the lag's really effecting. I personally think i've won a handful of battles because the other player just couldn't get inputs down correctly, which is just as bad as losing in my opinion. I personally can't stand something as simple as pressing the kick button and having it react about half a second later. Really there's no getting around lag issues but I feel much better about losing to a guy sitting next to me.

@StaticFalconar: You're much better than me, man. I thought the last tournament told you that. ;)
