First found in Super Mario Bros. 3, the leaf granted Mario or Luigi the tail and ears of a raccoon, an image which has become synonymous with the game. By wagging their tail in the air, the player can slow their fall. If player could gain enough speed by running on the ground, the player can fly for a period of time. The player can also use the tail to hit enemies or break blocks.
The leaf makes a return in Super Mario 3D Land where it grants the player the tanooki suit, complete with statue transformation.
The leaf also appears as a power up in Mario Kart 7 give the player's kart the tail. This gives the player the ability to knock other players or obstacles out of their way. It can be used repeatedly for a short time, similar to the Golden Mushroom.
