First 4 Figures, the same dudes that put out a awesome Metroid figurine early last year, have now revealed a Mario-themed chess set. The set consists of 32 hand painted Mushroom Kingdom inhabitants.

The Super Mario Chess Set is being produced by USAopoly for release this fall in the US. RRP $44.99.

I'll stick with the chess application that came with my Mac. Judging by First 4 Figures' past rep, this is going to be like $100+.

Edit: didn't see the price :C But for that price is it seriously "hand-painted?"

I don't like the choice of characters... The coin pawns are cheap, luigi is a queen and birdo is a bad guy? Come on :(

Rook should have been a thwomp, I mean c'mon. They move vertically and horizontally (most of the time), kick ass, and are made of stone.

Koopa knight should have been a koopa parakoopa...

Pawns should have been Goombas on the Koopa side.

Pawns on Mario side should have been Toads...
