I pay 70 bucks a month for the highest speed my shitty cable company will give me which is 20 meg down, and 5 up , and i do check it regularly to see where im at, and its usually not too bad...
lol, I never blame it on the other person's connection, unless it's Stang, stupid ass Antarctica. Generally, I know my internet provider is ass. I pay as much as you but get like 7 megs down, 1 up. It's been hindering my ability to play an online game at all recently, so I'm thinking of switching to AT&T U-Verse.
Yeah, your connection def is not the problem. Latency is also a part of the puzzle though, great speeds does not always guarantee low ping with your opponent though.
@lordofultima: My dad works for a company that's a subsidiary of AT&T that sells U-Verse, so when you wanna take that dive... I usually have a decent enough connection to where lag doesn't hinder everything, my only bad connection with a Giantbomb user is J0hnny.
As far as I'm aware, this is the standard Comcast line here in the Bay Area. I have a lot of bandwith to play with and I run my Xbox on a DMZ, so when there's lag I can pretty much guarantee it's not on my end. Then again, SSF4 doesn't have the best netcode ever.
@lordofultima: Thats crazy. You get noticable lag with an 8meg connection? My horrible home net is like under 1meg download (there were building works which fucked the line - I pay for 16mb) but gaming is usually ok unless someone else jumps on the downloads or whatever. Should say my upload is like .3 too.

I get phone, internet, cable all for like $20 more a month. My connection certainly isn't the ridiculous speed you have (it's 15 down, 1 up) but I can't see much use for a faster connection yet.
I've got crappy download/upload speeds but that's just the UK. My ping is usualy much better I don't know what's going on here. I've had less then 5 ping in games like COD2, COD4, L4D ect. Maybe it's just the time of day.
Ingame lag has very little to nothing to do with your bandwidth. Most online games require very very little thought output. Because only the most basic pure numbers data is being sent, such us your game inputs. This isn't like streaming porn or downloading a game. The biggest deciding factor is your latency (ping) to the server (or host in case of peer to peer connection). This is also not necessarily the latency that Speedtest shows you as it uses the closes server to you, which is not the game server.

I don't see why you get so riled up by 'people' on the internet. He obviously has no idea what he is talking about.
my internet is pretty good but when i play online it laggs like crazy most of the time....maybe its because im in nigeria and the servers are located too far away
Just because you have high-speeds, doesn't mean you are automatically going to have a smooth match. If the game is matching you up with someone from across the world, it's not going to matter how much you pay for your incredibly high-speed internet. You are still going to lag. The mistake your opponent is making is automatically assuming it's you, and not both of you.
Whenever I have a laggy match. I just assume it's the games fault for matching me up with someone that's waaaaaayyy to far away. Because I know for a fact that I have good, high-speed internet, all my ports are open, my PS3 is set to DMZ, etc. It's the games fault, or my opponents fault, not mine. More then likely though, I figure it's the games fault. /shrug
