    Overview

Due to their appearance and English name, they are often confused for the common raccoon. Raccoon dogs are a species of dog, and the tanuki is the Japanese name for the Japanese raccoon dog (latin name Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus). Also, they are often mistaken to be a fictional species because of their strong ties with folklore.
