Have the people still playing TF2 gotten good enough to make it impossible for someone thinking about buying the game to do alright? It seems like fun, and its pretty cheap on steam, but ive never played many PC games, and I dont have a whole lot of time to get good.

Just don't play arena. If you stick to the objective based maps, dying isn't too huge a penalty as you come back pretty quickly (immediately on some servers).

I'm going to play devil's advocate.

It is WAY too late to jump into TF2. Three years too late, in fact.

No it's not. Pubbies are fucking terrible. You can certainly just jump in without any prior knowledge and fit right in.

Join a server with something like "24/7 2fort - Fast Respawn" in the title. That would be a good place to practice and learn the classes.

It's definitely crazier now than it ever was before hats and drop systems became involved, but I think Valve did such a good job at making the game just FUN that it shouldn't intimidate anyone who's just jumping in for the first time.  And that's the biggest hurdle: from the outside it seems like there's way too much shit going on with the weapons and the crafting and the trading, but once your in the game all that flies out of the window.

No. Plus the community can be really cool. I've gotten into some deep ass conversations during matches before. Of course to meet quota someone will be sure to yell faggot here and there, but most servers don't take too kindly to that kind of behavior and are soon kicked.

Go play it now! I heard somewhere it actually makes your dick bigger too.

Guide to becoming good at TF2 on PC:

Join one of those 24/7 2FORT FAST RESPAWN servers. Something like eGO, or Niteclan, or one of those server sets. Figure out what class does what, and what their different unlocks do. Get pretty okay.

Then never, ever, EVER play on one of those servers again. Find one that is relatively local with a decent community, and experience the joys of playing with your internet bros, all night, erry night.

    Meanwhile on the 360 version.....................
"Why am I the only person who knows how to play Spy?"
On 360 it should be pretty easy to get in. On PC, however, you get to deal with all the fun content. :(

Nope, TF2 is still a very widely played game on Steam and has not reached the situation many other shooters have where decline in popularity has lead to the player base being whittled down to a handful of very skilled and committed players. Team Fortress 2 remains accessible on levels of both complexity and difficulty and has been able to keep so many easy-going players coming back through its regular updates. Just jump in.

At this point you will have to invest yourself tremendously in the game to catch up.

I've been playing since day one and even I'm starting to get confused with all the fucking weapon variants.

You can simply ignore all the variants in the beginning since you don't have them in your inventory yet anyway. Plus they are typical sidegrades. There are no cookie cutter builds in this game.

It's never too late to play Team Fortress 2. The game is fun, balanced, and easy to get into. Stay away from Arena or Highlander which are more hardcore modes that won't help you much early on learning the game. Other than that, it's very easy to progress and just learn the game and the class you play as. There's not really "catching up" that needs to be done. Although the weapon additions and stuff add variety, all of the base classes are still more than able to be effective on their own. In many cases (Soldier for example) the base class is much better than anything using upgrades anyway.
