Let me start out by saying that I have no interest in playing this game. I don't play MMOs regardless of quality. That being said I have a number of friends who do play them consistently and it seems that they're all digging on this game. The quest design leaves a lot to be desired but the combat seems to be keeping them engaged. One of my friends said that the ability to use a controller really hooked him on the game.

Tera
Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Jan 25, 2011
TERA: The Exiled Realm of Arborea is a free-to-play, action-style MMORPG, developed by Bluehole Studios in South Korea using Unreal Engine 3. It was localized for English audiences by En Masse Entertainment of Seattle.
I think this game is a hit.
It's such a hit that literally no site is talking about it unless it's an MMO site and even then you rarely see any coverage.
I've heard that they have about 700,000 people between the US and Europe (Korea is a whole other story). I don't know how many people it takes to keep an MMO profitable or if all of those people are paying (no idea how the subscriptions work), so take from that what you will.

It's too early to say it's a hit, ToR was a hit for it's first few months...
ToR is still a hit. 1.3 million subscribers is nothing to scoff at. World of Warcraft's impossibly high subscriber count needs to stop skewing people's perception of what equals a successful online game.

For the amount of money they put in I don't think peaking at 1.7 and losing 400k in just a few months is a success.
Anyone else glance at the thread title and thought it said "I think this game is shit."?
Which, judging from the responses so far would be more accurate.
Well, Mikey87144 said that his friends like Tera. So, it must be great. Good thing the internet is here to provide me with this useful information.
I only know a couple of people who are playing it, but theyre mmo fanatics and are admittedly only playing it til guild wars 2 comes out.
TBF it's really hard not to be an asshole about it when the OP is so ridiculous (in it's evidence and conclusion). That sentence is practiacally begging you to be a fucking asshole about it.
I only resisted the temptation myself being such a nice fella.
Trying the 7 day trial at the moment and I am really enjoying it. Since I got a pc that can handle more modern games again I thought I should try some mmo's again. I was always looking forward to trying Rift but I somehow really don't like the way it looks, very dark and unappealing (dare I say generic). Then I tried Age of Conan but that doesn't seem to have aged well.
Seriously considering ponying up the cash for Tera, I really like the way it looks (except for some oversexualized races), especially the world and the animations. The combat is really refreshing for mmo's, feels pretty much like a normal action game. Love playing it with my 360 controller.
Most of the complaints about this game seem to be about the endgame, and I don't care about endgame anyway. I even stopped caring about WoW once I reached max. Anyone playing this game too, maybe a small Giantbomb guild somewhere?

http://www.giantbomb.com/tera/61-29355/tera-guild-good-luck-have-batman/35-546016/#58 - Good Luck Have Batman is the only Giant Bomb guild I'm familiar with. I don't know if anybody plays anymore. Anytime I've logged on in the last 2-3 weeks nobody's been on. Kind of a bummer, because I really like this game and would like people to play with that I know aren't dickholes.
Getting into even the earliest of instances with random people has really soured me on the experience since a lot of people in game are just real dicks about everything including bias against certain classes and ESPECIALLY hating that they have to compete for loot with anybody else. I don't even care about loot, I just wanna play the game, but I couldn't even get into a Bastion of Lok run, which is only level 24'ish, because people were just straight up being asshats about everything.
Needless to say, once my subscription runs out the 7th of next month, I'm out. I like the game, but I really don't wanna grind it out alone anymore and public groups aren't for me.
I played Rift Lite, which is a free to play trial version of the game, up to Level 20, and though it's a WoW clone, it's a pretty damn well put together WoW clone. The game feels more finished to me than WoW ever did. I really like the world and the playerbase on the server I played on seemed alright. I haven't bitten the bullet and bought yet because I'm kinda suffering post-Tera burn and Phantasy Star Online 2's Japanese Beta is coming up tomorrow, so I'll probably pootle around with that and decide what I'm doing with Rift in the future.
Aah, that doesn't sound good (on the guildside). I did my first BoL run yesterday with a random group and they were really friendly, guess I was lucky.
@SirPsychoSexy: eh they said they can profit by the end of the year with just 500k subs so take from that what you will
Does anyone here still play this? The game is incredibly cheap on Amazon and I've been curious about it since the first trilers were relleased.

My personal recommendation is not to buy it. I played the beta and even though I absolutely hated it, I bought a copy when i was waiting for the GW2 release date (I regret both of those purchases by the way...) because I got bored lol.
It's an absolutely beautiful game. Probably one of, if not the best looking game in the genre at the moment both in a technical and artistic sense. other than that, it's very lacking. It's extremely grindy, has a horribly slow start, and the action combat it's so very proud of is, in fact, not that good...at all. I've never been able to describe it perfectly, but the first thing that comes to mind is lifeless. It just feels meh. Attacks have cool animations and all that jazz, but it just feels plain ol' bad. If you're seriously interested in trying it, I always recommend you download the trial first and if you're still interested, it's super cheap so it won't be a huge waste if you don't end up liking it.
If you're dying for an action MMO, at the moment and for the foreseeable future, my recommendation will always be Vindictus. It's also very grindy since it's instanced based, similar to a Phantasy Star Online game, but the combat feels great. Obviously, it's no DMC or Bayonetta or anything, but it's personal favorite combat system in an MMO...or semi-MMO...whatever...
@BabyChooChoo: Thanks! I plan on buying GW2 in a month or so. And I started playing Vindictus an hour ago. I'm definitely buying a gamepad tomorrow, I'm so used to playing action RPGs on console.
I like it. Defiantly the most fun mmo combat I have ever played. I like the art, hate the oversexaulized weirdo stuff in it.

Mmmmm... oversexualized, weirdo stuff.
Seriously, I think it depends on your outlook on things. My wife looooves those little bunny eared things... Elins. She will only play that race because they are so cute. Where one person sees a sexy kid, another sees a cute pixie with bunny ears.
