    Plot

The Courier, as the name suggests, is hired by clients to take items from one place to another, since the postal service has been ineffectual after the nuclear fallout. Fallout: New Vegas starts with the Courier being robbed in the middle of a delivery, shot in the head, then buried in a shallow grave in the Mojave Desert. Luckily he is saved by a robot named Victor and receives medical treatment from Doc Mitchell . His first objective is to find out why someone tried to kill him and what was so important about the item he was delivering. Before the Courier heads out into the world, Doc Mitchell gives them his PIP-Boy 3000 and a Vault suit.

The Courier then heads to Primm to find out who hired him and gather more information about the man who shot him. On reaching Primm, he finds out its been taken over by escaped convicts. The Courier then meets Johnson Nash, owner of the Mojave Express (the company who hired him). Nash talks about how the Courier was supposed to deliver a Platinum Chip but doesn't divulge any information on the mysterious shooter. He instructs the Courier to talk to Deputy Beagle, who was recently kidnapped by the convicts. Depending on player choice, the Courier either rescues the deputy or kills him and finds a journal. Either way, he is directed towards Novac.

When the Courier reaches Novac, he contacts Manny Vargas, who gives him the info in exchange for a job (though this information can be obtained a number of different ways). Manny informs him that the killer is with the Great Khans in Boulder City. When the Courier reached the city, he finds the Khans hiding in a building with NCR hostages. They say the killer's name is Benny, who betrayed them and ran off to the Strip. The Courier then heads off to Freeside and finds a way into the Strip.

Once the Courier is inside, he is told to enter the most exclusive casino in the area, Lucky 38, which is actually the headquarters for Mr. House (owner of the Strip). House wants the Courier to retrieve the Platinum Chip from Benny. He also gives the Courier a presidential suite at the casino.

When the Courier confronts Benny at The Tops Casino, Benny tries to kill him again. Depending on the player's choice, the Courier does one of the following:

    • Kill Benny
    • Return to the Lucky 38. This results in Benny escaping and sending his men after the Courier.
    • A female Courier with the Black Widow perk can seduce Benny to his room. Once there, they can have sex with him and may kill him in his sleep.

After this conflict is resolved, the Courier meets Yes-Man and a Legion messenger. At this point, he must also make an important decision: whether to side with Caesar's Legion, New California Republic, or pick between the two identities of New Vegas (Mr. House or Yes Man). This choice has long-lasting ramifications for the story of Fallout: New Vegas and its outcome.

The Courier's personal outcome at the end of the story, after the Second Battle of Hoover Dam, depends on the player's karma level and faction.
