So yeah, this game came out, and seems to have flown under the radar. For those who don't know, this game's premise is that it's the dvd commentary for a terrible sci-fi movie from the 60s/70s. So the gameplay is the movie, and the (super sleazy) director provides his commentary for the "dvd release". It's made by Ace Team, most famous for Zeno Clash. Here's the launch trailer:
So far I've made it maybe, half way up the tower (that's just a guess). I've had two boss fights, about 3 hours in. It's really good, and really funny, as it's made me legitimately laugh a few times, which doesn't happen often. It really nails it's aesthetic, and runs with it.
In terms of gameplay, it has a nice balance of melee and ranged combats. It really isn't anything terribly special, and it has it's janky moments, usually involving being unable to attack or grappling with an uncooperative camera, but it's still pretty fun. Also, the conceit of having a tower, that you can just jump off at any time, works really well, especially with the teleport system. It makes all the easter eggs and collectible a lot more interesting to get. Sometimes you need power-ups from later in the game to unlock stuff you saw early on, but that's only happened a few times so far.
At it's early discounted price, so far I'd definitely recommend it. I doubt it's going to be a very long game, and I wouldn't say it has a ton of replayability from what I've seen so far, but damn if I'm not having fun with it.
Anyone else playing it?
